CJ7: gearbox issues
« on: February 15, 2009, 06:26:36 PM »

Took the CJ for a longer test drive today and have highlighted a few fresh issues.

•   Pulling away in 1st gear ok if no more that ¼ throttle, if you give it full boot then you get a nasty noise and it jumps out of gear
•   In 3rd gear if you take your foot off the gas you hear and feel a big backlash thud, only happens in 3rd have tried in all gears and not the axles.

The box is an ally cased unit with a ford badge cast on it so from what I have read this makes it a Borg-Warner 13-32 (SR4) 4-Speed Manual, does that sound right?

Also could a badly repaired fork on the gear stick cause any of these issues?

Have you rebuilt this box or put any money into it?

Read Novak Adapters knowledge base on SR4/T4/T5
They rate them as too weak to be worth making an adapter for.

You'd do better getting a T176 as they stronger and I think maybe shorter and there's a few about.

T176 is 12.9" from bellhousing face to T/C face if that helps.

the sr4 is considered a weak box normaly found behind the 2.5 and a few I6s the wonky stick may contribute to the jumping out as may not be making a clean selection fot the detents to hold in gear it there any hoises or humming wirring aprt from the backlash in third

Check all your rubber mounts, engine & transfer case. I spent ages trying to track down a similar thump on deceleration, but only found the real cause when i had to slam the anchors on in an emergency, the whole transfer case jumped up and dented the bottom of the tub! Turned out that the 258 was just so heavy it masked the real problem for ages!
