XJ: Oil filter housing tips
« on: February 16, 2009, 08:53:29 PM »

Has anyone got any tips on changing the seals on the oil filter housing on a 4.0 petrol cherokee 1994. Mine is leaking loads, is this a common problem????
Housing is very close to the inner wing and is mega tight. A local garage have said that to do it they will have to possibly chisel it off in turn breaking it and that souns ££££.

And help would be greatful.

Cheers Ben

Yep, did mine recently. There's a o-ring kit from the Jeep Dealer for about £5, then you just need a Torx bit for the end of the housing. I had to cut the bit down and use a spanner to turn it, it's stiff to get going but after break the seal it comes out no problem. Total job took about an hour on top of normal servicing and cost about £10 extra - you obviously need new oil and filter when doing this job.
