ZJ TD: Immobilser Not Switching Off

Hey guys 1st time poster and I don't own the Jeep in question but I am to buy it from a mechanic friend if i can help him get it going!! So your help will determine whether i become a jeep owner or not!!

its a 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 2.5TD Manual transmission.

Hes had it a few years and its good mechanically but its been laid up a few months as it won't start. His details are sketchy on this but he reckons it gave trouble after jump starting a car one time. It started refusing to disengage the immobiliser; he then took out the battery to let it sit and after a period of time the alarm started to sound. he seached frantically for the power pack for the alarm but never found it (any ideas where it is?).

Long story short he's never gotten the prob sorted since, anyone know if it is common, if it can be fixed and how? can he just bypass the immobiliser and if so how/ where is it?!

Any help appreciated, if you guys bail me out i'll be joining the Jeep owner ranks with this fine machine

Lol. Ask Bishops finger about ZG immobilisers.

The vehicle isn't a 99. It's probably a 98 which was registered in 99. Model year is very important on American vehicles. Registration year is irrelevant.

In 1999, the Grand Cherokee WJ was introduced, the diesel engine was a 3.1 auto.

yes its the old shape as opposed to the 99 on shape. well i will await bishops fingers response then!! cheers :-)

Right....

1/For a start make sure the batteries in the fob  are Ok..

2/ Then as the Doc advised check the alarm siren system which is situated some where inside the drivers side inner wing

3/ Check out the BCM (Body control module ) which is inside the drivers side footwell (right side of accelerator pedal)

4/ TRy  the passenger door control module  which is I guess err in the drivers side passenger door..

For 2/3/4 if you don't feel comfortable doing the work take GC to a very competant auto electrician/Jeep specialist

For 3/4 said modules can be optained from clued in breakers...heard of one in Hairyfoot tho that seems a contradiction CJD or summat..












At no fucking point send said GC to Westbury in shrewsbury coz they couldn't wipe ther arses with a GC service manual if they were given instructions and you'll be bankrupted with phone bills asking them how  the repairs going coz the brainless shits concepts of customer service is on a par with Jade Goodys latest hair care range

Have heard of a similar thing happening before with a suzuki. Jump starting another vehicle can apparently cause a voltage spike to damaged the ecu of the car that is doing the jump start. The suzuki then refused to start again. Initially I was sceptical but I'm now hearing more of the same happening so I avoid giving anyone a jump start, if I do I disconnect my battery first. Remedy for the zuk was replacing the ecu.

Thanks for the help guys any more info you guys can think of please let me know. I'm away with work this week but will give him a compilation of all this good stuff when i get back. i appreciate the help

Its alive!!!! He took out the siren and it came back from the dead. May take a test drive this week and see what I think but at the moment its looking unlikely I'll take it as I'm going to see a landcruiser on Wednesday that looks to be a better option. If the LC doesn't tick the boxes then maybe the GC will be back on the menu
