Bi-Hex UJ bolts.

I've gotta remove a (CJ) propshaft thats held on by those poxy little Bi-Hex headed bolts both ends.

Non of my spanners seem to fit, tho it looks like a 5/16" bi hex spanner would fit, mine don't seem to want to.

If I could find a spare one ( I must have one somewhere, just don't know where) I could take it to an engineers merchant and get sorted with something.

As it is I'd have to toss the complete axle on the trade counter.

Anyone got a clue what size they are, I'm fed up of grinding their heads or wacking f**k out of them with a hammer and chisel.

All the ones I've come across are 8mm double hex.

These have a 1/4" UNF thread on 'em and the T/C and Axle drive flanges are theaded to take 'em.

They're on the flat strap type UJ retainers and are a PITA!

U bolt types seem easier to work with and are 5/16" UNF thread so I suspect they are stronger, but this bugger aint got 'em.

Actually, I never tried any metric spanners, 'cos I knew they are UNF fixings, but I'll give it a try tomorrow.

5/16 A/F= .3125"
8mm A/F= .315"

dont think you will notice much difference

will be better with a 6 sided socket for sure if you can get one on  :wink:

for the TJ i use a 1/4 drive 6 sided 8mm socket IIRC

Cheers, I didn't know that.
Maybe I should actually spend some time reading all those expensive manuals I bought.

I guess they guy who nailed the Yellow Perril (CJ7 diesel) together before I bought it didn't know that either, 'cos there were LOOSE cap head bolts holding the UJs on when I got it.

one use foooooe. have re used em nuff times with no probs. it like the sump plugs. never ever ever changed one nor had one leak.

Doesn't mention anything about replacing them in the FSM. I'm pretty sure it would state to replace them if they were.

are these stretch bolts then ?

use some thread lock and no problems.

After all that I found a 5/16" bi-hex spanner that dropped straight on them 100% good fit.

Other 5/16 spanners I got won't fit or slip.

Moral of the story: stop buying cheapo spanners from market stalls.
