Whining noise (not the missus)
« on: May 28, 2007, 05:22:34 PM »

I can hear a whining noise, it only appears when I lift off the power, and it goes again as soon as I touch the throttle, any ideas?

It seems to be from the front, wouldn't the noise be continuous if it was the rear diff? Also the whining slows as the car slows so it is something to do with wheels/axls I think!?

I had a similar noise on mine late last year, varied with the accelerator and gradually worsened. Turned out to be the pinion bearing on the front diff which eventually failed along with the oil seal, locking up the front diff and knackering it. One replacement axle later...

Cheers,

Stuart

Grab hold of the front propshaft at the axle end and see if it moves up and down. Any movement and the pinion bearings are shot.
