Please help me!!
« on: April 16, 2009, 08:34:43 PM »

Hi all.
I have a dead jeep on my drive that i need your expert advice on please. I have tried a search but nowt with this exact problem came up.
Its a Cherokee 96 4 litre and it has been trouble free, till now...The problem is my 2 keyfobs have suddenly stopped working, the batteries are showing 3 volts and i put a new one in just in case. The nice man from the AA tested the fobs and found they werent transmitting any signal, but the batteries are fine? Jeep said they could look into it but would need the car and the keys/fobs. Thats the problem because I cant even get into the car without the alarm going off and there is no chance of starting it!
Would an auto locksmith be able to help or do i need to trailer the jeep to the dealers??
Thanks for any advice you have...........

Sure there was an emergency start procedure, something to do with turning the ignition
with the driver door open.

Have you used the search facility on this forum?

Search “immobiliser” and you’ll find loads of info which might help solve your problem.

This is an extract from a ’97 Wrangler immobiliser info sheet which might help, but really don’t know.

Quote
The Wrangler immobiliser will only work in the vehicle it has been programmed to accept, it does this by checking the vehicle's VIN number upon first turning on the ignition after having its power disconnected i.e.. Vehicle servicing / flat battery etc.. If the Led stays permanently on when the ignition is switched on, the system will need to check the vehicle for its VIN number and compare with its expected VIN number. During this process, which can take upto 20 seconds, the ignition must be left switched ON. Successful comparison is indicated by the LED extinguishing if the vehicle had previously been unimmobilised or by a rapid flashing showing that the vehicle is immobilised.

You got me all excited then...........but alas no magic black button. Even the alarm isnt sounding when I enter the vehicle, only when I try and switch the ignition on?

Sounds very odd. Have you tried disconnecting the battery for an hour, to reset everything?

Well the jeep is now sorted.
Had to get it recovered to Jeep in Staverton. They did their expensive magic trick and £220 later i have 2 new fobs which needed programing. Oh and it cost me £90 to get the thing towed there.
