Key fob issue
« on: April 14, 2009, 10:09:31 AM »

I am new here and to Jeeps so please be gentle. I have just bought a 2003 Grand Cherokee CRD Overland. It is great and I am very pleased with it. I have one issue, the remote locking key fobs.
One of them does not work at all, (I have checked the batteries) the other locks the vehicle but does not open it.
Are these repairable or inexpensive to buy? Any tips or advice would be welcome.

Thanks

Jonny

Hi Jonny, another oilburner WJ on the forum. :supz:

As for the key fobs....these things are meant to operate from 7 metres away.....fat chance...I have to hold mine just outside the window next to the steering wheel and on a good day will lock & unlock at once...tried new batteries as well...no good.

Read somewhere that u can buy new ones and have them re-programmed (or program them yourself following a sequence of somesort).

Will be interested what other Birties have to say on the subject.

Oh.....btw.....don't forget to post pics in the rides section....pass by the intro section ....and divulge all how you found the Jeep & the best Jeep Club in the universe...

You can get replacements but a dealer has to program the Jeep to accept them.

Thanks for the input chaps. I thought I would post an update. I have investigated further. Second hand fobs on eBay sell for around £25, I am fortunate that I have a Jeep breakers near me but they want £25 plus Vat also.
I would then need to get them reprogrammed, my main dealer ha quoted me £23 plus Vat. The main dealer (Marshalls Cambridge) will however supply and programme two NEW fobs for £125 inclusive. For once, the main dealer is the most attractive.

Sounds like the best option if you can afford it for piece of mind.

I think I will do it, for the extra £30 I get guaranteed new items.
Are there a Haynes or similar publication for Jeeps btw?

Go the main dealer in this instance...
