Problems with Steering. Driving me nuts

4" Skyjacker lift completed 1 year ago and OK but in last 4 months steering getting heavier and difficult to keep on straight. Topped up power steering fluid. At rest doesn't look like much play. Mechanic tightened steering box up ( too much initially - locked steering) then found part of problem to be extension arm from lift kit coming loose. Bracket welded to axle helped. Still wierd steering though. When cornering and changing from right to left, it suddenly becomes light and clunky not smooth like it use too. Mechanic says ? box problem but new one £1500. Could it be anything else before shelling out for this? Could it be steering pump, steering shaft u joints
Please help

Could be the two small UJs in the steering column, they do seize up and make the steering notchy. Don't go shelling out £1500 for a new box, good second hand ones are about for about £100
Oh, and welcome to a fellow YJ owner!

An XJ steering box should fit.
