Wheel Bearing?

Compared to my old one this XJ which I only had for a week is very noisy from the front end, dry grindy kinda sound .. same in 2wd, 4wd or coasting in neutral ... seems to point to wheel bearing giving up the ghost but are there any other likely possiblilties to check out?

... and, if wheel bearings it is,  what does the panel think of replacing with something other then the standard Jeep jobbys? ... I seem to remember reading someplace at sometime about Warn replacement units being desirable (which no doubt means they are mega money!  :roll: )

Don't talk to me about wheel bearing.I have had a right game with a MOT inspector with a wheel bearing on my cj.

Regarding your problem speak to bubba he knows what he is talking about, believe me. :lol:

hi nigel

i have changed both my hubs twice... check for lots of play
first replacement was from lighthouse not too much offroading didn't last 12 month !!! even had slight play from new ??
second set i got from www.4wd.com much better brand and feel

part number 53007449  that's for a TJ

also don't rule out the front prop, the carden joint inner bearing gets dry and soon make a strange grinding or churping sound, even if the UJ's are ok

if you take the front prop off and you still have the problem you know it's not that....

shep is spot on the money fwd do the best replacements for fook sake dont buy them from jeep way way to much cash warn are only realy needed for  super modifieed jeeps or unless you yust have to much cash :smt028

Thank you shep .. will try taking off the front prop and see (or listen) what happens .. is it just a case of packing that inner bearing with grease if it seems dry?

Bubba, having too much cash has never been a problem for me in life thanks to publicans, women and, latterly, Jeeps! ... so I will heed the advice of shep and yourself and head towards 4wd.com if new bearings are neeeded  :wink:

If your carden joint is fubar'd it sounds like a small cluster of sparrows. Mine keeps doing this.

if it's the prop you need a needle end grease attachment
then in the centre of the double carden joint you will see a rubber boot, gear box end, pull that back and grease that sucker up  :smt081

you can get the parts to rebuild the inner bearing but work out about £130 from light house and if it has worn the locator on the end of the prop you will need a new prop eventually  :smt085

Having driven the beast a bit more now I reckon the noise is coming from the front diff.  My theory is that despite the low mileage its probably done a LOT of towing (tow hitch looks well used!) and drivetrain stuff is wearing out before it normally would

Im gonna change the diff oils in a day or so and have a looksee if anything obviously knackered.  Any pointers as to what to look for with regards most likely bits to be worn out and what can be sorted by someone with only basic mechanical skill without specialist tools with axles in situ?
