Sticky Stuff

Hardly technical but what's the best way to remove trim adhesive?

I'm pulling off the plastic side trim from my XJ and getting the double sided trim adhesive off the bodywork is proving to be a right PITA!!!

Tried WD40, Evostick adhesive remover, and all manner of other things that alledgedly do the job but no!

Has anybody else got any tips?

Zippo lighter fluid worked for me.  If not, you can buy label remover solution from somewhere like maplins.

BUTdont get paintwork too wet, dont leave it on the paint and test a small area thats out of the way first

If you know a bus driver, ask them to see what they use at their garage, I used to get some stuff that removes everything is bio degradable and doesn't damage the paint/plastics, brilliant stuff.

petrol is very good on a soaked rag  i cleaned all the decal gum of my cj it was well baked on tried allsorts but petrol did it pronto

You can get a special rubber wheel that goes on a drill. It's what body shops use. Forget what it's called but any body shop supply factors should have them.

Spot on Mike!

Any motor factors should have them, known as 'Toffee wheels' or 'Caramel wheels' (they smell like toffee when you use them). Quick, cheap and effective.

Also called fudge wheels as well. That's what I tried to get but couldn't find one anwhere! I ended up using a ton of WD40 plus a polishing disc on a Dremmel. Came off easy this afternoon. Job done!!
