XJ Electrical Probs, headlights
« on: October 09, 2009, 11:53:38 PM »

Hi all

I have a 1996, P Reg Mk1 XJ 2.5TD Limited. I have encountered a prob with my headlights.

I pull the switch out, and all I get is sidelights. If I operate my main beam flash a few times, eventually, the dipped beams come on.

Anyone had this before? Before I start changing everything from the switches, steering column stalk & relays......

Cheers all

Check the connector on the back of the headlight switch and the main multi plug for the lighting harness behind the N/S headlamp first. Both are prone to melting.

Cheers all.

After getting into some delightful positions, and having most of the dash apart, I found it is actually the multifunction stalk on the column that is the prob. Intermittent sticking on the flasher.

Well until I can get a replacement, I will just have to stick with flashing loads until my headlamps come on.

Cheers all.

I can now go and try and find where my coolant is leaking from and find where my Turbo is blowing. Any assistance there would be appreciated. Especially as there is no trace of coolant anywhere ...

Hav a good weekend all

Maybe. When I pull the knob to turn headlamps on I get sidelights. After flashing the stalk a few times main beam come on. I noticed last night that the headlamps went on and off after going over bumps. Could it be the stalk? I cant find anything wrong elsewhere.

Please email me if you have a stalk. I am currently trying to sort Turbo out.

Turbo seems to whine and blow a little. No smoke coming out exhaust. Inlet manifold elbow and EGR gaskets are leaking. Previous owner seems to have stripped the threads in inlet manifold. Retap and helicoilin manifold Wed night. Gonna strip down Turbo and EGR, clean and refit with all new gaskets. Hopefully that will cure it.

Cheers all

Enough of my frivolities. Now for some more serious help.
The connector blocks behind the lamps and the column switch are fine. I now have 2 more symptoms show themselves.
1- When headlamps finally on, they are brighter with the engine off
2- With the headlamps on, I have a smell of plastic/rubber coming through the vent to the RHS of the steering wheel. The smell goes if only sidelights on.

I have removed the trim from drivers footwell and its damp. I have found a leak around the top of my windscreen seal. I have used my special temorary fix on this .... clear silicone!!!!!

Is there any easy way to gain access behind the warning lamp cluster without removing the steering wheel and dash?
Can anyone guide me to where the ground points are for the elctrics in this area so I can check for corrosion & connectivity. All help gratefully recieved.  :017:

Who knows, once I have this sorted, my EGR & Turbo resealed and working properley, and some decent tyres, I may be tempted to lose my Off Road virginity with some of you peeps, and take the plunge with some of the easier green laning rambles .........  :icon_super:
