Got a problem with my 1999 2.5dt Cherokee Orvis which suggestions on curing would be gratefully recieved. Having found a big hammer and lots of patience I recently did the nearside front UJ and ball joints which obviously meant removing the brakes and hub. No brake probs before but now I experience excessive brake pedal travel. This occurs usually on start up , but not always, and if you have run a while without touching the brakes, but not always. The vehicle stops okay and the ABS light does as it should. I didn't disconnect any hoses to the calipers. Not losing any fluid at joints or out of the reservior (which has not run low at any point) Having read previous posts I am thinking (clutching at straws) it might be something to do with the ABS system, or just coincidence that something unconnected has gone wrong at the same time.

sounds as if you have released an air pocket from the caliper when you removed it causing the spongeness when not used. Best bet is to bleed the brakes fully starting at the rear and then checking to see if there is a difference. plenty of one way valve bleed systems on the market that are good so no more shouting at a friend to lock the bleed nipple etc

it could be knock off... check the play in the wheel / bearing....

I second this suggestion. I always knew when a wheel bearing was going out on my Landrover 90 as the brakes would need a pump to take up the slack. As the hub moved around excessively it would push the caliper open and the brake pads would have to be moved back towards the disc the next time the brakes were used.

I wonder if you have tightened everything back up tightly after the UJ change. The 3 hub bolts need checking and did you torque the main hub nut (36mm) to 175lbft? Jack up the front end and see if the front hubs have excessive play, there should be none or hardly any.

Thanks guys, top advice  :icon_super: I hadn't done the hub nut up anywhere near tight enough. I must have just assembled it to 'a bit stiff' and meaning to torque everything up at the end and forgotten :icon_redface:
