« on: November 09, 2009, 07:10:09 PM »

hi, i have a 2003 grand cherokee 2.7 crd overland.

getting about 350 miles out of a tank doing town driving.  Is this any good?

any ways to improve economy (im getting general grabber at2's this month for the pay and play days)

You need to be much more specific. Exactly how much fuel are you putting in (in litres) and what is the mileage you are covering between filling up to the top each time?

I had the same engine in my Huge Merc Sprinter and it would regularly return 22mpg even shifting the brick shaped box and a full load around (3.5T GVW so anything up to 4T at times). It could also be as low as 15mpg on a flat out mercy dash across the country or upto 30mpg if I drove like a saint and never went faster than 48mph all day.

Your fuel consumption will depend almost entirely on the way YOU drive. Once you cover the basics like correct tyre pressures, clean air filter and oil changes then there is not much else you can do.

I know I keep trotting out this pic but just so you get an idea of how impressive 30mpg is take a look at this

putting in about 60 ltrs so thats about 25mpg i think.

got a very light right foot but tried varying- (thought of carbon build up etc) always run my tyres at 33psi all around and used to run it with a mapped ecu.

think i got 1-3 more mpg with this on?!

Sorry peter, and I don't want to sound like I am having a go, but you have to be more specific. In fact you have to be accurate.

'About' 60 litres to do 'about' 350 miles can give a hugely different result.

If it is 62 ltrs and 340 miles then that is 25mpg but if it is actually 57 litres and 365 miles then that is 29mpg. You have to record the mileage and do the proper sums. Try to fill up at the same garage/pump as well because if the forecourts slope in opposite directions when you fill up it will give wrong results.

fuel consumption (mpg) = 4.5461 x distance travelled (miles) divided by fuel used (litres)

mpg = 4.5461 x miles/ltrs

25 mpg is about right for mixed driving, you might see 30 on a gentle motorway run.

My overall average is around 26 for nipping around but with runs to Bangor and Bedford its gone up to around 30 .  On a trip to LeMons this summer it averaged 34 with a full load.

sounds about right then.  i am getting 25mpg in town and upto 36 on a run.

tried disconecting MAF but i get a lot of black smoke.

thought things were clogged up so took turbo to bits and i had a fair bit of oil in turbo fan (petals) and pipes linking to turbo and air filter (the black rubber pipes) is this ok or do i have other issues? :100:

They're all a bit oily. Don't worry unless you are using lots of oil.

Yep, the Merc vans also run oily in the air pipework, even when newish (15-20k)
