Hi all,

I'm a newbie not only to this site but to Jeep also. Just bought a 2000 Cherokee 2.5TD and I have a couple of issues and I am hoping to get some help for you kind Jeep owners ;-)

When I switch on the headlights (dipped) everything is fine. When I switch on the mainbeam the dipped headlight element goes out. This makes it quite difficult to see as there is now no light on the ground. Can anyone advise?

Second issue is the reversing lights do not work - I've checked the bulbs.

i think the main beem elament is now full of dark and wont now work
or the swith needs replacing have you tried a new bulb just in case by some fluke of timming they have both blown

If both of the reversing light bulbs are actually working (swap em with indicator bulb to test), then your Neutral safety switch is playing up. The next symptom of this, is having to jiggle the gear lever around to start it..... been there done that.

Do a search for neutral safety switch & you will see how it needs a good clean, usually sorts it

Double check the reverse bulbs as they are twin filament but only one is used, you may have tested the redundant ones.

does he not mean the lights go out .......and he has no headlamps on main beam

Hi,

The headlights work perfectly when on low beam and they work perfectly when on highbeam. The point is when I switch to highbeam the lowbeam element goes out. Should that happen?

As for the reversing lights - all bulbs have been tested and are working perfectly so it must be a sensor or something. Does my Jeep have a Neutral Safety Switch (its a manual transmisison)

yes the head lamps are fine i miss understood what you mean at first the reversing lights wil have a switch on the gearbox but i cant say where i will have to leave that for others

Yes, it is normal for the dip to go off when the main beam is on. This is the case with most vehicles with single headlamps. There is a reversing light switch on the gearbox, the neutral saftey switch is on automatics. but have you checked the fuses?

Hi Mike,

you will have to forgive my stupidty (cars are not normally my thing, at least fixing them  ). I have not checked the fuses as I did not realise that the reversing lights had a fuse of their own (all the other lights work). Is this fuse located in the main fuse box (next to the battery)?

I had the same problem with my 2.5dt Cherokee regarding the reversing lights. Checked bulbs and then shorted the wires on switch -  lights came on therefore switch no good. Being a tight wad and having no social life I dismantled the switch located on the side of the gearbox, cleaned up the terminals and glued it back together. Two years later and no problems - still got no social life though

Hi Tree Man,

I removed the switch and shorted the terminals on the wire, hey presto - lights came on!! So this definitely infers a faulty switch. The switch does not look faulty however, just a ball-bearing at one end and the plastic terminals at the other. I will now try and find a replaement.

Going back to the headlight issue.. if you need a bit more light when on main beam, think about upgrading the bulbs. Another possibility is removing the headlight entirely and cleaning all the silvering on the inside so it reflects better. (I did all of this when I filled my headlights with swamp water and mud ) I've often thought the standard lights on my Cherokee are a bit weak, I guess that's why so many have extra lights up front.
