Very hot Transmission, any ideas

Hey all

Well I have a few more issues with my TJ, Because I have removed the carpets etc inside the jeep a few years back I am used to the transmission tunnel always getting a little warm in the past, but the other day after a 8mile drive I noticed the tunnel getting rather hot. Hot enough to not want to leave your hand there for too long. Investigated underneath to find the gerbox and bellhousing very hot to touch also, aswell as the transfer box and the belly plate. Even the close parts of the chassi was warm to touch!!  :jpshakehead: Actually it was at this point I noticed I have a very small oil leak from the bell housing and top of sump of engine oil ???

Now the engine temp if perfectly fine, thought maybe I had some contamination in my transmission fliud, so changed both gearbox and transfer box fliud. Close inspection I found no contamination of either and it was only changed 9 months ago and have only done a few hundred mile since so.............. :017:  there apears to be no malfunction of both either, no funny noises etc.

I have just changed the exhaust rooting but not where the heat problem is. The re rooting is from the rear of the cat back. Could this be being casued by the cat? No rattling sound from it like its breaking up at all :017:

I have just put another set of axles underneath, D44 rear with ARB and D30 front with truetrack, warthog has had an idea to test to see if they are locking on and will do that in the morning.

Any other ideas or insight greatly appreciated as I am loosing my will to live at the moment. :banghead: Was looking forward to cheapfest and now face the possibility of not having a truck ready for it!

Lack of carpets and insulation really does make a hot vehicle..... My YJ is hot on a sunny day with heater off and windows open. if all your fluids are OK ... I'm sure you're OK.

The heat is normal. Like sitting next to an Aga. I used two layers of this self adhesive foil coated acoustic insulation stuff on the transmission tunnel and floor above the exhaust  [attachment=1].....   Keeps the heat out and reduses noise. You can get it from car audio places and Ebay.

are the hoses to the oil cooler hot to touch as well. if one is cold then you have no cooling flow (stating obvious) As a precaution you could put a thermocouple into the transmission via the dip stick and read what the temp is when stabilised. What you might be reading is a transmission at 100 degrees C with little cooling air flow so the heat uses whats around to dissipate the radiated heat.
 
Measure the temperature before you realy start to panic, it might be slightly higher with bigger tyres etc. Or fit another cooler with an adjustable thermostat

I don't think.... could be wrong...... that Asylum has a trans cooler on his TJ..... although having read this months JP I reckon all auto boxes should have an aux cooler.
no reason that manuals can't have em either..... just need to do the plumbing.....still don't think thats the prob.......

Got a hot YJ..... well it was in July when the weather was hot...... been out today to try to heat the bitch and........ well its feckin' autumn so below halfway on the dial..... :jpshakehead:

Hi all

Thanks for all your replies and it seems correctly pointing me in the direction of paranoia!  :icon_rolleyes:

Through some playing around today have located the major heat source as being the cat. Warhog has an infa red/thermal temp gauge, point and check type and pretty much checked everything. Compared all readings of components to that of my almost stock TJ (Everyday Driver) and all was the same except 3 things. The underside of the tub above the cat was not getting as hot, the belly plate was not getting as hot and neither were components conducting the heat next to it. So then looked at them both in more detail to find as I have replaced the whole exhaust system with stainless on my every day TJ the cat on it is smaller and has extra shielding directly on the cat as it stainless. The distance between the cat and the bottom of the tub is huge, same with the belly plate and allowing lots more air flow. On my offroader, as the cat is close to the tub and maybe 1 1/4" from the belly plate more heat is being transfered to inside and other components.

But as the belly plate has been on for a couple of years and has not changed I must all of a sudden be paraniod!  :icon_winkle:

In the future I could help the situation by fitting a smaller cat and lowering the belly plate a fraction maybe.

if you go for a smaller cat doesn't the internal bore size reduce as well ?

can you put some heat shielding in place around the cat and between the tub and gearbox, doesn't have to be thick metal sheet just thin bendable ally as this will dissipate the heat quicker.
