Apart from engine issues such as Momo's had....head gasket?? What else to watch out for seem to recall a ball joint recall at some point....

Trouble Spots

Consumer Guide's® Auto Editors have scoured repair bulletins and questioned mechanics to search for commonly occurring problems for a particular vehicle. In some cases we also give possible manufacturer-suggested solutions. In many instances these trouble spots are Technical Service Bulletins posted by the manufacturer, however, we have our own expert looking at additional vehicle problems.

Air conditioner: Water leaks onto the passenger side floor requiring a new A/C evaporator drain hose. (2002)

Brakes: Rear brakes moan on light application requiring anti-rattle strips. (2003-06)

Electrical problem: Instrument panel lights flicker requiring replacement of the body control module. (2006-07)

Engine noise: Snapping noise from 2.4L engine in the 600-1400 rpm range caused by camshaft bearing caps and is corrected by chamfering the caps. (2002-04)

Exhaust system: After a short trip (about three minutes) to the gas station, the tank may be difficult to refuel because the emission system is pressurizing the system and installing a flow management valve fixes the problem. (2002)

Exhaust system: Squeaks that seem to come from the front are often from the parking brake cables in the rear rubbing on their guides while a rattle from the front is probably coming from the exhaust crossover union on which the springs should be eliminated. (2002)

Fuel pump: The engine my crank several seconds before starting due to loss of fuel pressure caused by a bad check valve in the fuel pump assembly. (2002)

Gauges: Temperature gauge reads higher than normal on vehicles equipped with 2.8L turbo diesel engine when under load requiring reprogramming instrument cluster. (2005)

None: Chirping noise under hood caused by serpentine drive belt secondary idle pulley which should be removed and a shorter belt installed. (2003-05)

None: The carpet in the cargo area wears out prematurely requiring replacement. (2002)

Transmission problems: Transmission may suffer delayed engagement after sitting overnight due to split in the filter in fluid cooler return line. (2005-06)

well mine wasnt head gasket it was fooked up by moi, and the previous owner.
In fact everything that has gone wrong with it has been user error.
Today I took it for a gas service, to find the filter wasnt replaced when engine was swapped, a/c has been peranantly on despite what inner dials are doing and 3 hoses were hissing air so that explains poor consumption at the mo, other than that its aaaall good
cheers for the heads up on flashing dash Tim and i'll be sure to watch out for them pesky carpets  
I love it and use it for all sorts and cant wait to spend more on it, having said that.......a wrangler would do the same, be cheaper to fix, and have more stuff to play with

ball joints are an issue, had mine replaced on recall twice, they are non greasable and go dry then fail

look on lost kj, loads of stuff on there about it

there is a company that does greasables too, moog i think it is

For towing, you'd be better of with a diseasel. Regardless, anything newer than March 2001 is gonna cost
a bastard fortune in tax.

I've owned my 2005 model 2.8crd auto KJ for over two years, and can confirm that the instrument lights do occasionaly flicker.  I put it down to the odd canbus system in use in the diesel model, which also prevents it from working with the trip functions of Scangauge II.

Also the delayed transmission engagement, especially if I park facing uphill.  So long as you wait a few seconds before releasing the foot brake, this isn't a problem.

PX value of mine seems to be £4k - £5k (74k miles).

As much as I like the Liberty, I still want one of the LWB Wranglers (I have my eye on a couple of high mileage ones at the moment).  I would even be tempted to sell the TJ to pay for a few mods.

Depends what you're towing, the diesel would be better but I'm sure the v6 will work (any cheaper to buy) (and less smelly) (and quieter) (and not a VM)....

Previous owners have used it for towing ...the only towing I do is The Flashimobile at Ribbo

Your government has a nasty habit of going back on it's word, and has CO2 readings for all cars made
since 2001. I'd be very worried that the higher bands will be extended back to then - it would please the
treehuggers no end.
