How much for wheels, tyres and a lift?
« on: November 15, 2010, 04:16:07 PM »

More n00b questions, sorry . . .

I've decided that I want to run 33" tyres on a TJ. What sort of lift would be best?

Roughly how much should I budget for a lift kit (supply and fit), and for some suitable wheels (nothing flashy) and decent tyres?

Thanks

if you look at my post in reader rides, you can see the tj I just got its got a 4" lift and running 33x12.5x15's in the pic , as to how much it will cost for everything is a bit harder, depends on what lift you buy and what combination of wheels and tyres but I guess you will be looking to spend anywhere from £1100  upwards

4" lift from Llama4x4  - £575
disconnects - £70
Wheels - ? didn't find a price with a quick search

If ya stick with 33x 10.50s  as opposed to going with 12.50s like most people you can use the factory wheels with a 1" spacer ........ less money and ya wont need extended wheel flares. (Why do you need the spacer you ask?)  To keep the rubber out of the coils on the rear....

Wont look as butch tho! :icon_twisted:

33's on a TJ with a 4" lift probably need a Slip yolk eliminator and rear prop plus a re-gear if you are doing lots of road miles.

i run 2 trucks, one is modded as above, the other is done on the cheap with around 3" of lift and 1" body lift, it has standard gearing but 5th gear is virtually unusable. We get away with it because its not used for long runs.

They both are on 15" rims with 4" inches of backspace and run 33x1050

i would go for 31's, its a big step tbh

Talking about SYEs I have a 231 from a YJ with Slip Yoke eliminator and propshaft...... would fit a TJ as well.............. been sitting on a shelf for 3 or 4 years now......... Might just be persuaded to part with it :icon_twisted:

So if you got the bad vibes cos of a lift............then maybe I got the solution :icon_twisted:

Hmm. Beginning to think you might be right!

I don't need 33s, but they do look better. Certainly don't want to go less than 31 because it just looks lame. This guy seems to have a very tidy setup with 32s though: http://www.stu-offroad.com/suspension/tire/tire1.htm

Why don't Jeep put something half decent on as standard and save all this messing around?  :icon_winkle:

OK, with a maximum of £4k to play with this may need a rethink. Looks like I'll revise my ambitions to a 2" lift and 31s and see where that gets me.

as with everything in reagards to modifying your truck, start simple and get used to what it will do then you will come to a decision of where you want to be and with what, also you will find lots of different ways of getting to the same answer as it will depnd on what brand or manufacturer you prefer.

my xj started out with 235/15's with AT pattern then 3.5" lift, tyres went to 265/16's MT pattern and now it's at 5.5" lift and now with the option of going to 33" tyres. this all happened over a period of time as i thought of what i wanted. cost over 1k in all and next mod is long arms but thats even more money.

if i'd gone straight to the final choice then i would have lost out on the learning curve through experimentation

It depends what you want to use the vehicle for - if it is going to do minimum road miles and is just a toy for a bit of offroading then you can through the lower end type kits at it and not worry too much about steering angles, geometry, braking, comfort etc.

My XJ has been modified so that I can drive at 80 for 500 miles to visit European offroad sites, hammer it offroad for a long weekend and drive back. To achieve this means I have a modified steering and braking system upgrade (to cope with the lift and stopping 33" tyres), a long-arm lift kit, expensive rear leaf springs, slip yoke eliminator, decent shocks... all on top of the body protection, winch & bumper etc.

My advice on £2k budget allows for all the little extras you might find you need (brakelines, new tie rod ends on steering cos you discvoer the old ones are worn, wheel alignment costs...) and should allow you to buy tyres you want not just whatever is cheapest a the time.

All just my opinion of course  :icon_biggrin:

Wise words James
Tell us what you want to use it for you may get a more precise answer
Me and my brother in law both had tjs at the same time
Both ran 33s
Mine had 3.5 rubicon express lift with sye 33/10.5
His had ome 2" lift with 2" body lift and transfer drop
Both where same size though he had snazzy American racing alloys and wide arches
I ran jeep alloys with spacers
His looked better but got hung up on ruts crests etc offs road
Mine had more clearance and articulation hence better off road it was also same track as a Lanier so off road sites it  ran on existing tracks better
Both probably cost the same money to modify
So you see it depends on where you want to spend you money on looks or performance
Simples  :003:
