Belt squeal on XJ
«

Since its got cold, when I first start my XJ theres a belt that squeals like mad for a bit - I guess it just needs tightening? Can I get some advice on how to sort it?
In other news, the noise like a flock of birds under the XJ has disappeared and after a few unsuccessful attempts, after waiting for everything to get nicely up to temp, I finally managed to get the transmission into 4WD and not get stuck in PT4WD
Which was nice

there is a belt tensioner near the alternator that takes up most of the strain but the major adjustment i believe is done by moving the alternator.
the more you swap between P4WD and 2WD the easier it gets

Thanks chaps. Only does it when its really cold. Its wet today but warmer and is quiet.
Dave69 - It's happy to move through the settings, but only when its thoroughly warmed up. When cold it won't go into 4WD - gets stuck in P4WD. With the slippery conditions its like having a new car when its in 4WD - although perhaps not quite as exciting on slippy roundabouts

Presuming its the 4.0, just leave it in full time 4WD, fuel economy is 1 mpg worse than 2wd & for me it just drives a whole lot better

I'd say leave it in 4WD. I don't get any real fuel penalty in mine for doing so and the drive is so much better for it. I've also found that after doing this for a month or so it shifted happily between 4 and 2WD much more happily. Never had that issue on the other XJ but this one took a while to settle down a bit.
BTW - anyone know how to get the dash off so I can put a new light in for the full time
. Done the foggies and switch but can't see an obvious way into the dash for that one..... unless it all just pops off again

mine did have the same problem as it wouldn't go past P4wd so it was a case of luck when used but the more i tried the easier it swapped the drive selection. just persevere with it
