Tow strops

Have an option on some 3 tonne strops, is that sufficient for the Bastard and the CJ?

3 ton pull or 3 ton lift?

personally i would take curb weight and times by 3 ie: for the CJ 6 ton lift, from memory the bastard weighs more but thats assuming its made from metal and not rust

saying that i have seen much lighter rated stuff used to good effect

If they are 3 tonne breaking strain then leave them.

If safe working load SWL of 3T then breaking should be 21T (factor of 7) - which is what you want

From my design days, we would use a minimum safety factor of x2 for the designed weakest point.

Anything involving man movement, eg a lift, then I think it was 5x safety factor as a minimum.  

As I say, this was in the mid 80's, so things could have changed (and my memory aint what it used to be).

As I say, this was in the mid 80's, so things could have changed (and my memory aint what it used to be).


But you will also have taken consideration of shock loading and the wear of the product before it reachs discard criteria.  Thats why the FS is usually higher on the lifting slings (as well as choking it which reduces it) - for nuclear plants they work at 20X. normal for ropes is 5:1, 8:1 mining - seen it down at 3:1 - but generally short term usage and disposal of items.  All down to the designer and the risk involved.

I used to work at Bridon ropes/British ropes - one of the things was teaching rope inspectors for the insurance industry and another was in the test house and inquest department (where items were sent for analysis of faillure by HSE)

5 ton minimum and with it being 10mtrs long you can double up.

towing vehicles also depends on how good the person is behind the tow vehicle steering wheel, if they are a muppet and don't know what they are realy doing then the breaking strain is irrelevant as the either drive over the tow rope and snap it or rip something off one of the vehicles

personly i like chain if you are used to it you can tow quite smoothly and when the twat you are towing runs over its its not trashed

It does take out the tug when setting off, as does anyrope compared to a strop

I have some strops from Devon 4x4 that are 2t SWL at 7:1. This must be the minimum I'd recommend cos I've snapped some stitching on one of the tree strops with my XJ hanging off it  :icon_eek:

Funnily enough, I threw the strap in the back of the JK this morning and headed off to do some things. Came round a corner and there's an extended transit van right across the road with is rear wheels down a ditch. Strap out, hooked him up and he was out within the minute. Nicely timed, postie!! :003:
