Cant find the Instrument light fuse (1193 YJ)
« on: December 04, 2010, 09:19:17 PM »

I have no lights on my instrument cluster, so the ovious thing to check is the fuse. But do you think i can find it. I have looked on the fuse carrier (just above the throttle pedal) and i believe its fuse #10 but the fuse in there does not do the cluster lights.

Am i looking in the wrong place? Or should i just go and watch X-Factor  :lol_hitting:

Well i didnt find the fuse, but i took the dash out (all of it) and found loads of wires that needed re-terminating due to previous lash ups (not mine i might add lol) and all of a sudden the lights worked.

It still anoys me that the manual shows fuse #10 as the instument lights, but not on my model. Good job im good at vehicle electrics eh  :icon_super:

1993 is the only YJ FSM shown on here...

http://www.jeep4x4center.com/jeep-service-manuals/index.htm

Looking at the wiring diagrams on page 8W-92 there is a Splice E2, fed from fuse 10. This splice is also on page 8W-92 shown as connecting to pin 21 of the cluster connector for cluster illumination. You had the right fuse. Maybe you have a bad connection somewhere along the way or the previous 'repairs' rewired it. Do the cluster lights dim? if they do they are wired to that fuse.

Yep the instruments do dim and on closer inspection it is that fuse. Cheers for the clarification.

On another note, is it normal that both indicator arrows illuminate at the same time. Ive checked the diagram and pins 18 & 7 (left turn /Rigth turn) are separate. Is this another bodge or should they flash a t the same time?

Oh and if anyone wants a copy of the workshop manual for a YJ (1987-1995) PM me and i will burn you a copy

sounds like a bodge to me they should be individual unless using the hazards lights, the fuse is fuse 10 for all years I believe if you check the wiring its an orange or orange/black wire that run  in paralell and takes its feed from a 5 amp fuse but on my old yj it takes the feed from the terminal on the light switch so I would check its getting 12v there to start with.

That's handy cos mine don't work either! My dash looks like it's been wired by a builder, do they usually? :017:

I do a lot of mods on Audi's, and your cconfronted with Can Bus, Fibre optic loops. And for me to do anything i need to plug my laptop into them. These Jeep harness's are dire and the quality of the connectors make me cringe  :lol_hitting:

Indicator lamps in the cluster should flash separately. They are shown at the switch on 8W-111. If they come on together and no diodes have been used to stop feedback then your indicators should act like hazards too?
