TD2.5 piston / bore problem..
« on: January 23, 2011, 08:21:56 PM »

Hi All,

On going saga with my wife's 2000 Cherokee 2.5TD, started with a pressurised water jacket so removed heads found no4 cylinder to have corrosion around the top of the liner. I have a new head to go on but before I start to put it all back together I have a niggling feeling that all is not well.

When I rotate the engine by hand the bore of No4 leaves a single trail of oil the whole length of the bore, about 2mm wide, there isn't any scoring in the bore surface.

Could it be..

a. broken ring.
b. all ring gaps happen to be in line.
c. worn bore due to 140k.
d. ?????

Is it possable to drop the sump and pull the offending piston out add new rings and put it all back together...??

Cheers

the bores look better than the diesel i had.

drop the sump and undo the big ends and push out the top and see if the rings are all in line which it looks like

give the bore a deglaze while your at it.

Thanks for your reply Dave, would you know if the big end bolts are stretch type and need to be replaced and torque setting for said bolts???

DONT turn the engine with the heads off unless you clamp the liners in position. It has wet liners, the only thing that seals them at the bottom is a thin O ring, turning the engine can break the seal, leading to disaster when you've put it back together and all the coolant ends up in the sump.

Just finished banging my head against the wall.... Life doesn't need to be this hard surely....!?

I have turned it over by hand half a dozen times, turns over real easy... How can I tell if I have broken these wee little O rings...?

Mike with your in-finate wisdom / knowledge / far more cleverer than my wall heading butting self.... what are your thoughts on my oil left on the bore question?

Cheers

turning the engine over by hand shouldn't dislodge the liners from the o rings, as by age the liners should have slightly rusted into place but by using the starter motor it will turn the engine over fast resulting in a high chance of the liners being dislodged.
