Author Topic: Is this noise normal and could it be causing my lack of air from heater problem  (Read 4091 times)

I've a wj 2002 2.7crd limited and have noticed recently that the temp controls of the heater work perfectly but the adjustment on where to divert the air to do not.  Also noticed that the strength of the air flow is very poor irrespective of the setting.

I only seem to manage to have air coming up to the defrost window at dashboard.

Been suggested that it's a vacuum leak.

Any ideas on how to check this on the crd.

Also posted this YouTube video of the noise being made after switch off.  Is this anything to do with the vacuum system as it sounds like a leak.  I pulled the top hose of last week when it was making this noise and it does stop.  It's reconnect now though.  Perhaps I buggered something up by removing it.

Any and all ideas appreciated.

Hi Paul,

Mine does that too but I do not have any ventilation problems.  Buzzes for a bit after switching off.  Never thought anything of it.

Always wondered what that was tho.  Something to do with the fuelsystem or airco  :017:

I'm sure Mike will know.

There is no vacuum control on the WG. If you gave no air flow the recirc door may have broken.

What is the buzzing 'relay' thinghy that runs for a min. or so after switch off on the 2.7 CRD.

My 2.5 VM cherokee does the same thing....a buzzing  for about 20 seconds after i shut the engine off....

Its nothing to worry about....  just the bees in the air fliter settling down...

I only had it off long enough for the sound to stop.

How would I test the recirc door is broke or not other than the lack of air?

Can I reset the air flow in any way other than plugging it back in?

Gonna pull any codes of it in the morning.

If you put the fan on max and turn the recirc on and off and the roaring sound of the airflow doesn't change the recirc door ain't moving.

Ok, I've done the diagnostic and trip up the following codes:

22 = Left temperature door travel too large
46 = AI (Recirc) motor was not responding
52 = AI (Recirc) door travel range too large
56 = Right temperature door travel too large

Are all of these relating to the recirc?

I'm new to jeep ownership but don't mind getting my hands dirty.

Where Is the best place to start with regards to fixing these.  Would these faults have been caused by me removing the hose when it was making that noise and if so could I reset it in some way.

Ps, just done a few searchs and if the blend doors and or recirc doors need changed is this the part I need?

Does this include both parts and will it keep the dual controls?

Update:

I've just pulled the glove box and run the fans.  The motor for the blend doors is working but it only seems to operate when adjusting the drivers side temp control.  Is this normal or a blend door problem.  At present I have hot and cold but the strength on either is useless.

There are 2 motors, one for each door. Only one is accesible without major surgery. If you have heat to both sides, they are both working. The recirc door is further to the left. You should be able to see it through the intake grille under the dash in the passanger footwell.

Do the codes suggest door blend or recirc or both.  What is the recirc for, is it just recirculation or air or to control the direction of air flow as well?

Sounds like the motor is fubar/problem with the spindle. Time to disect the blower unit

Is this the main blower unit or a secondary one?  Can it be accessed without removing the dashboard?

Reset them manually and see which ones return, the procedure is in the info on the link above. There is a repair kit available to replace the blend doors with the dash in situ for about £100 but if the recirc door has gone it's still a full dash out job. IIRC, if you remove the blower motor assembly (in the passanger footwell) you may be able to see the recirc door through the hole. If you can move it around easily with your fingers, it's broken and blocking the air flow through the HEVAC housing. If you can live without the recirc function, wedge it half open or grab it and rip it out of the housing.

If the motor is gone and I didn't replace it what function would I loose, the ability to change air direction or just the ability to recirculate the air?

It would be the door spindle broken, not the motor. As far as air distribution is concerned, that is a separate issue.

Ok guys,

Just finished working on the wj and have discovered that the door blend was not the problem.  They work perfectly.  As soon as I pulled the motor out I was able to manually turn the door blends and knew they were working.

It did indeed turned out to be the recirc flap.  It had broke and fell on top of the motor causing little to no air.

As I didn't want to take the dash out I instead just fixed it up against the grill behind glove box.  I now can't recirculate the air but that does not worry me.  Everything else all sorted and all without taking the dash out or cutting big holes.  Total cost to fix was about 2hrs and a couple of cable ties.

Hi, Just acquired another Jeep after a decade of Explorer and Ranger Rover ownership.

The 2005 WJ 2.7 CRD that I've got has the irritating buzzing from the same little unit under the bonnet.
I've noticed on another older post that Mike said it was normal which is comforting but does anyone know what it actually does?

I suspect that the buzzing noise must be linked to the CRD Very High Pressure fuel system and it must leak off to somewhere, like a bleed off back to the fuel tank, similar to HGV's? mine has done it from new.

I've also heard someone with a TD5 Disco talking about such a buzz so it sound like it could be a fuel relief thing.

So'right mate, i used to be a spanner, semi skinned, a few years ago, and i know the CRD uses a very high pressure system so's the fuel goes into the injectors at the right pressure (some one will be along with the right PSI later) no fuel injector pump, now when you switch of ya engine, all that pressure must go somewhere, and just like Hgv's and Bus's it must leak back to the fuel tank, or we would have exploding fuel lines all about us, and at the price they are charging now, there would be expensive puddles about.
