New Jeep Owner with some problems, needs help
« on: March 07, 2011, 12:19:24 PM »

Brought a 1997 grand cherokee that is running both petrol and LPG. Car runs fine. replaced all the Leads, Plugs, filters, rotor arm and cap. all running fine however 2 small problems are evident.
1, i will be driving along the motorway and suddenly loose power, like a blockage in the fuel system this is on both gas and petrol. had a look and have cleaned the injectors with injector cleaner. still same problem.
2, Checking water level every day and have noticed that once a week the water seems to vanish out of the header tank. Dosnt go down slowly. Just all goes at once. No water seems to be in the oil and i cant see it leaking out anywhere.

Could the 2 problems be related in anyway, or is it something else? i am going to check to see which head i have.

Any help and advice would be great.

check your passenger footwell for a wet carpet as the heater matrix might be leaking

A '97 won't have an 0331 head.

Check hose connections to the rad for leaks, splits, pinholes, the clamps weren't holding to full pressure on mine a whole ago so I replaced them and water loss went away.

For the other problem I not 100% on what it could be, unfortunately it sounds like one of those problems that could take a while to trace and is not one I have experienced before.

Think i am goingto work my way around and change all the hoses. I notice on close inspection that the ones used for the LPG conversion seem pretty cheap and nasty and theres some moisture aroundthe edges.

As for the miss fire etc. did it again the other day. but now seems only on petrol. think will install a inline fuel filter and see if that helps. I suspect the steel tank may be a bit rusty inside and could be sending crap to the injectors. Probably my fault for putting injector cleaner through it.
Good to know i havent got to worry about a dodgy head at least. Been doing lots of little mainance jobs and found today that if the wind is blowing dont have your fingers near the door latch.  :lol_hitting: kinda hurts

Any rusty stuff from the tank shouldn't get as far as the injectors.  if the filters were glogged it'd be more consistent, could be fuel tank crud messing with the fuel pump output though....

Is the oxygen Sensor just about where the carb is? a black thingy attached to the back of it? If so thats my next point of attack as i read about it on some american forum and how it can get all "carboned up"

Sorry been reading up on the building of a rochester quadra jet just before i put that post in. I meant the Throttle Body. I really should try to deal with 2 different engines at once especially while tired.
