K&N Panel Filters
« on: December 22, 2005, 06:28:55 PM »

Just put one on the Cherokee, most impressed.
MPG and performance are back where they were before fitting the 30" tyres, from 20/21 mpg before the filter back to 24/25mpg and plenty more mid range grunt  :D

Getting about 40-45 miles more to a tank of juice now, should pay for itself in 4 fill ups.

Sounds good
Apologies for being a thick dastard and not meaning to hijack but is this the one that fits in the air box , is just a straight replacement, as opposed to havin to modify bits to fit it, and compatable with a snorkel in later life..

I been thinkin about one for a while..

yep, straight replacement for standard filter, no need to be classed as a mod for insurance either  :D

Dodster, i have one to fit our TJ over crimbo and will also be fitting a snorkie and throttle body spacer.

Hopefully that will give us back the performance we have lost by fitting 31's.

Will let you know how we get on and how much difference they make.

the theory behind TBS is sound, tuning the length on the inlet tract between throttle flap and inlet valve will increase performance if correctly tuned, I just dont think bunging in a 60mm spacer will work. Now sticking in a post 99 inlet manifold will work, much better flow on each branch into the head, wonder if there are any cheap to be had in a scrappy :-k

Fitted K&N panel filters to 4 vehicles over the years  can't rate them enough easy to fit to fit - one of my main Jeep tasks over the break is to clean mine

Out of curiosity Steve where did you get yours from?

ive been playing with k&n's and throttle body spacers ect for years when i used to race a golf gti...............

k&n- no difference but never had to change it again (big plus point)
throttle body spacer- decreased power but gained midrange torque???  never could work that one out

#best increase overall...... headers and new exhaust. doesnt have to be a sports exhaust just a new one. ive got borla headers on the 2.5 wrangler and a new timax sports exhaust (cheap) and the difference is fantastic especialy in the lower end torque.

as most of you know from phoning me i could make a fortune selling k&n's and full sports exhausts but i dont think ive sold any yet. everyone has gone with my recomendation (and been verrrrrry happy) with a genuine jeep filter and midrange timax exhaust and saved £4-500 in the process.

k&n's dont like offroading, they are designed for dusty conditions not damp sludge, they clog quicker than standard filters when damp thats why genuine jeep filters have a foam prefilter and if you bend a £500 borla exhaust you will cry when you bend a hundred quid timax or the cheaper 60 quid one you wont realy care...................

k&n, spacer and borla on mall cruisers
cheap stuff on offroaders

just my tuppence worth......... every wallet is different

We used to fit K&Ns to the bug based stuff but I have to say that we re- located them to the roof and had these natty little sponge socks that went over them to try and keep them clean.

I wouldn't have thought the damp would cause them a problem if you have a snorkle fitted.

you shouldn't be getting damp sludge in your airbox
If it gains me 15% more mpg its worth buying :D

Gwyn - One of the 'bonuses' of a K&N is the fact that they don't like sludge / mud - especially if you don't have a snorkel - I've either read or met someone (alcohol muddled memory) who dumped their XJ into too deep water/mud - filled the air box, but nothing got past the K&N - engine stalled but wasn't hydrauliced - that seems like a result to me   ) Snorkel sounds PFG on full bore as well (which tends to cock the light-footed approach)

I'd be grateful if Mike or someone could confirm for me that after a battery disconnect, it takes about 50 starts before EMS/ECU settles down - would this affect economy in a big way (economy is improving slowly since LPG was installed, but don't use Jeep as daily runner or for particularly long journeys)?

mu cherokee very often had water up to the wipers and even with a snorkle fitted and all holes sealed up i found sludge in my airbox...... bloody pain i could never work out where it was getting in. my k&n quite often found its self on the back seat drying out for the journey home as i couldnt drive it with it in. it ended up in the more pain than its worth pile but hey each to thier own and there is more profit in a k&n i just personaly dont like them, id rather take off the viscous fan and fit an electric and gain 10% power back and more economy.

everyone is different and every car behaves differently to each mod

Once again my air box looks like its got a coating of crap in it (Dodster saw what happened..... )

After Gwyns post I feel good knowing once I clean it out I can clean my K&N and leave it to dry and run with the old stock filter
