What a day!
« on: October 09, 2011, 06:46:23 PM »

So after washing the jeep this morning, I thought to myself, hmm, time to fit that 3 core rad I got off IOM and fit the new thnermostat from x-eng, so off we go out comes the old rad, take off all the ancilliaries, fan, water bottle etc and mount to the new one and go to pop it back in, my gosh thats all a bit tight by the powersteering box, hmmm lets take it out again and have another look, so yes you've guessed it its for a LHD jeep, grrr :jump_125:

So after a bit of humming and harring I come to the conclusion that since its an all metal rad, i can cut off the mounts and braze/silver solder on the old ones from my old rad, I can silver solder pretty well, so decide to have a go and just go nice and gentle......

the mounts came off pretty easy so i positioned up the new ones and got out the porta pack (oxy-acetylene), light her up and off we go, the mount metal doesn't seem to need much heat atall and before long I've got a nice silver solder joint, then pooof I go and blow a hole in the bottom housing, arse :icon_twisted: :icon_twisted:

Normally with copper i can braze over a fairly large hole, but what ever this is made of is super thin and its a megger struggle to braze over the hole without it getting bigger, I tried to silver solder a 1p piece over the hole but in the end found that with a mixture of brazing rod and silver solder I could  get a seal. anyhooo i then gingerly soldered on the other 3 corners and then let it all cool down.

Next i went to mount it and get some water in to see if there were any leaks :jpshakehead: :011: :jpshakehead:

Guess what, where I had been silver soldering on, the silver I was using melted at a higher temp than whatever the manufacturers stuck the rad together with so a load of solder had flowed out of the join where the bottom housing meets the rad..........Rad out again, and un solder the new mounts, re silver solder half the whole bottom housing on, re solder on the mounts and re-fit, this time nothing has leaked so I have put it all back together and been for a drive and it all works lovely!!

Just looks like I will have to change the transfer box oil in the dark tomorrow after work, though it won't be all that dark as I have just bought the mother of all bright torches, an LED Lenser, brighter than a bright thing thats bright! and for reasonable money

yup can do, its not the neatest soldering but it holds, so that'll do for me,  :icon_super: the stuff it was put together with is very like plumbers solder that you'd find in solder fittings like in your central heating

the place where i worked out which made copper/brasse fin coolers/radiators only used low melting point braze/solder as this reduces the blow through that goes with high melting pint braze or solder

will do phil, a first observation is that the 3 core rad is twice as thick as the original, but no deeper than the mounts of the original if you see what I mean, so should have 2wice the cooling power in the same dimensions as the old one

well the new rad is the knutz, it worked very well with the leccy fan, we had some small wiring issues (my fault) and so had to swap over to the viscous I was carrying as a spare (phew!) and low and behold, even under heavy winching (up vertical 20ft banks) and with no shroud the guage never moved further than the mark between 40 and 100, so all in all I think it is a worthy investment

now the question is: Do I leave the viscous on or re-plumb in the leccy one?

then again, under heavy winching, i'd have the hand throttle on so the viscous would be spinning faster....
