Fault Finding woes

Afternoon! so after last weekend where I snapped off (on my 98 TJ) the offside lower control arm mount and imploded the top one, this then moved the offside of the axle back about a foot, I then limped back to the trailers and hoped that was it....

Now back at home and I have re-strapped up the axle in a bid to make it cautiously driveable to my local garage. I went to re park the jeep on the drive, and in 2WD low it got stuck as in the suspension was compressing but the car wouldn't move, i then drove it forwards and it seemed ok is but quite lumpy, i also tried it in 4wd hi and low and everynow and then it would get stuck and make one of those orrible metal on metal sounds

i put the transfer box in neutral and went through all the gears, all ok, then i stuck it in 2wd low and jacked one wheel up, it spins, then i put the front locker in and it stops spinning, just the pinion backlash. so i switched the locker off and gave it another spin, the propshaft turns with it then stops, then starts, then stops, then starts.

also worth noting when in the car and i select reverse in low box, its quite clunky before it drops in, whereas i'm sure it used to go zzzzzzzzzz and in, whereas now it goes duggahduggahduggah and in, do we think this is just because i'm in low?

so my question is, do we think i have a rogered front ring and or pinion, transfer box, gearbox, rear r/p or a combination of all or some? is there any other tests i can do to proove stuff, before i have to start taking covers off and shafts out??

Sounds like transfer box. Take props off then jack up each axle and try turning them, and run transfer with no props on. Should be able to pin point it that way.

Sounds like transfer box. Take props off then jack up each axle and try turning them, and run transfer with no props on. Should be able to pin point it that way.


shoulda mentioned, it was the front lower control arm mount on my HP dana30

Hmmm, if that is the case, I wonder if now is the time to go 4.88 as i run out of power in 3rd low, or d60 and listen to a whole load of I told you so's :jpshakehead:

So.......it turns out i have stripped both the front ring and pinion of teeth, also somehow or other i have spun the longside axle tube in the diff pumpkin socket......ffs!

well i was always taught if you are gonna do something, you may as well do it properly!

Pretty sure i may have located a FSJ or K30 (or is that the same thing?) on the island, so may have arb'd up axles for sale in the not too distant future....


Edit looking at Bulldog's photos, it could be an M715 lurking :003:

Cheap as chips instant option is..........
Get a High pinion axle complete from an XJ......... the Rand P are stronger..but only cos they are forced together under load.......you have found the hard way about axle tubes..been there but only a small 'degreeage' on the long side.
Don't know what gears your running but some XJs diesel but deffo Petrol 2.5s were 4.10 or 4.11

But after you done that and fitted the ARB and then changed the Rand p and done same with rear.............

You know what I'm gonna say don't you...............???








Dana 60 is yer friend...........even if you use a FSJ axle  (dana 44) which is stronger and heavier it will have the same strength shafts and UJs as your running............. unless you go Moser and CTM in which case back to point 1

that was all done on a 4.56 on a HP axle from a diesel xj with an arb, but I suspect the R&P damage was from after i moved the off side front axle back a foot after the lower control arm mount ripped off, not sure how I have twisted the tube tho.....maybe something to do with the rcv shafts I'm running in the front....Just waiting for IOM to say told you so!!

I would say that you twisted the tube when you ripped the control arm mount off, because the upper and lower arms are what hold it in the correct position / camber. Fitting the strong shafts probably led to the R&P damage rather than a bust UJ - BUT maybe you'd have had several bust UJs without the uprated shafts, who knows.

Sounds like an adjustment of driving style or fullsize axles (Dana 60, Ford 9"/D60 hybrid, Patrol axles...). Dana 44 front axle will need uprated shafts and uprated mounts/truss to survive what you've done to that XJ D30 - the shafts and UJs are the same size and the mounts probably very similar.

This will be in the Birty archives from not too far back but on e-bay was a guy selling axles from his CJ7 both were Dana60's and had ARBs and 4.88s and were cut to CJ YJ TJ width. not cheap but he had them made for him.....

I saw them under the vehicle when I went to look at a Dodge Dana 60............ He's getting out of 4x4 and breaking is his only option.

Has a set of swamper 38s for sale to suit as well................

Not very good at digging things out of the archive ................ some one will be along soon doubtless.

Might save you over the next few years.................. will mean you have to run Dana300 TC tho :icon_twisted:

or perhaps ashcroft force 9's, which i believe are a sort of bastardized Dana 60 running rcv shafts and landrover diffs, then with the possibility of ashcrofts new arb-esque locker, and a visit to the bank!

I know the axles you mean, the terra ones that were on ebay at £5k with tsl boggers attached to them

TBH I think I did most of the damage when (as James said) the control arm ripped off, so I am just gonna get everything beefed up and replace like for like and I still intend on fitting your Dana 300
