Tube fenders
« on: November 01, 2011, 03:13:17 PM »

Just about to order some steel for the 1 Tons fender requirements.......................

But being a joiner I'm still confused by 'gauge stuff'.................

When I did my traction bar and side steps the wall thickness was about 3mm on 1 3/4" ERW

Apparently (googled a chart on this) 12gauge is 2.7mm

So for fenders I am using 1 1/4" ERW and gauge wise.??????????????????????

12g       = 2.7mm
14g       =1.94mm
16g       =1.55mm

They got to be strong but not bomb proof.............. also I am using a pipe bender Mau Mart stylee not a full blown tube bender from JD2 (I wish)

otherwise known as the 'kink master' If there are a few ripples they will be covered by the sheet steel. so no worries there.

Gut reaction say 14g.................. All advice very welcome................... in the dark here :icon_twisted:

when I made Tonkas tube fenders I used 50mm x 4mm seamed tube, 2 options if you want to limit the 'ripples' 1st is fill the tube with wet sand and plug the ends, also seen it done with ball bearings but hard to get out, ok if only doing one or two bends, 2nd is to make some forms, square bar with a u shape milled length ways to replace the small rollers either side of the push form.

You will struggle to form any sort of bend using a standard bender under 3mm, when I do my rollcage I will be using the wet sand method and 2.5mm wall thickness as I too would love a JD2 bender but can not justify buying one.

nice one Greggmo.......
Bit the bullet today and ordered some 1 1/4 tube, a 6.1 metre length!!! Its 10g so I guess thats 3mm or near as .120 spec that used to be.... gonna be doing the wet sand trick for bending..

Also 1  sheet of 1.2mm and  1 sheet of 2.5mm.  1m x 2.5m for bodywork........ wing tops and stuff..........

Bundlebox delivered on Friday........ new carrier for the 14 bolt and lockright for the front dana 60. Started diff cover removal and oil drain on the front dana 60 tonight.

Also retrained myself on the fantasy build and DIDN'T buy the caddy 500 and th400 for £511..... guess I'll live to regret that :jpshakehead:

Apart from that just trying to avoid S.......A..........D.......... that is biting me in the ass as usual :die:

I have a set ready to fit :003:

If you want them Jez?

Generally, to prevent ripples. Pack with sand and seal ends. Make sure the sand is well packed.
