Just a query

with the round LPG tanks, are they specific in their installation or can you fit them in any orientation?

Can be fitted in wheel well or stood upright in place where spare stands.................. or so I've seen.

ideally they should be installed laid down, then the liquid level indicator will work correctly and the liquid pickup pipe will also be in the right place.

although the sensor that indicates levels usually gives you a big

I always try to work out my miles so i dont run out...too often
underslung with plate was best for us as we needed the space

just wondering if a conventional spare wheel tank could be rotated to the vertical position with no issues

as said the only prob will be the fuel guage.

I've seen one fitted like that in an XJ but I don't know the technicalities behind installing one like that. My fuel gauge hasn't work for the last 50k miles on LPG, I just count miles and quite a few times I run out and do a few miles on petrol to get to the station, fill up and am back running on LPG again. Putting a bit of proper fuel back through the system is probably quite good for it.

Have heard there may be issue running out of fuel when using a single point LPG system though?

I know a few people who have run out of gas on single point and had problems wit rough running directly after, this I think usually comes down to the fact they have not had the system serviced regularly and thats where the problem lies, they forget there re filters in the system that need changing on a regular basis.

I'm running single point on the xj and, although you may be suprised, i run out quite frequently with no ill effects. Just a loss of useable revs until it doesn't move. Fill up and alls good until the next time, which happens a lot as i have no gauge.

used to have no gauge on one of my Nivas, just used a stick to dip the tank.

Last year i was in a garage in Poland , and this guy came in for some fuel....his car had run out of fuel a few kms down the road...

He produced two large pop bottles... not a problem in Poland , they will put you fuel in just about anything , apart from a paper bag....

BUT..! the guy wanted lpg...?

god knows how he was going to get the lpg from the bottle into the car...?

what you got to ask is when did you last get a puncture,for me it was october 2008,in the lorry when i worked with bubba.So no real hardship not carrying one all the time.Just throw in a spare when you go playing.......simples.

Err... 7.30 this morning...on a deserted freezing track through the foggy Polish forest towing a trailor full of boxes....

I had a spare , but had taken my ammo box with jack and tools in out of the car to get more boxes in... sat there for three hours watching the wild boar wandering past till my mate turned up with some tools...

Ironic it was the first time i had driven without all the tools needed to change a wheel...!

2006 for me, seat lean only 2weeks old with stupidly low profiles on it. Puncture and had to replace the tire at £200.

Only take the spare if going on a long run somewhere with caravan.

Hey, what's the worst that can happen and most new cars don't have them anyway now.

after a bit of digging around, the spare wheel variety (horizontal) are designed for that form of installation. if they are rotated to sit vertical then even though they still work they could invalidate the insurance as they are not installed in the manner they were designed for.

if your gas system does not have a pressure sensing valve and most single point systems dont ,when the lpg tank runs empty, for a short period of time the engine will run lean which is not a real problem as it is usually only for a few seconds

yep your totally right but i used to spend more of fuel per month than people paid motgages and now with a serious pay cut due to a permenant job the dual fuel route has to be seriously considered if i want to keep the jeep
