Think your backed into a corner here Jay.

Remember my ABS ecu woes ? Got a replacement from Carlos that was faulty (not his fault and dealt with professionally) plugged it in and the truck went into limp home mode (which wasn't the case before).  So moral of this story...truck is fine with totally busted ECU....truck is effed up with partially working one or the other way round.

Ended up @ dealer with recovery truck, left the car there,  fortunately found one on Fleabay, delivered to dealer, dealer fits and works some DRBIII & laptop magic......ecu good and accepted by truck.....happy days.

Only difference was when everything was said and done it cost 350'ish in stead of 700 new off the shelf.

Funny to hear that all ecu's on the bl**dy car cost 700 notes  :icon_rolleyes:

If it was my car, I would take the risk of a used on without a moments thought,

As its not mine I want to help and save them money but don't want it to not work and cost them more in the long run.

What did the dealer charge you dutch for the DRBIII and laptop magic?

The letters at the end of the part number are the revisions and updates from  my experience of oredering parts. The replacement could be an older one with only minor differences.

You will still need to go the main dealers for the gearbox adaptations - they will not guarantee the work - catch 22 I'm afraid.

I think im in the exact same place as your mother-in-laws truck, ive been getting the mil light on, and ive noticed that it happens when i start up and put the car into gear, and as I do the jeep "jumps" into gear, mil comes on and then its in limp home mode. If I turn the car off and back on, it comes out of limp home mode, but mil stays on until i get to about 43mph, and then it goes out. This might not happen again for the next few startup times, then for no reason that I can tell it does it again.

Would you mind reporting back when you've had a bash at changing the part and letting us know the outcome?

(ive modified my post as it cut half of it off last time!)

Oh shitttttt, its happened to me now too....

Now it is in limp home mode max 30mph and wont come out of it.

I'm stuck in limp home mode (it did this to me on the way to getting the MOT done  :011: )

How did you get on with changing the TCM?

Brother-in-law is a mechanic, and he thinks one reason might be a low oil level in the gearbox (although no visible signs of leaking), and suggests draining and replacing the oil.  Now Jeep say that the gearbox is a "sealed unit" and that to change the oil, guess who are the only ones that can do it....yep the stealers themselves because they are the only ones who have the dipstick to measure the level.  I've got the manual for the car, and it says:

(5) Add following initial quantity of Shell 3403 to the transmission
(a) If only fluid and filter were changed, add 5.0 L (10.6 pts.) of transmission fluid to transmission. (b) If transmission was completely overhauled, torque converter was replaced or drained, and cooler was flushed, add 7.7 L (16.3 pts.) of trans-
mission fluid to transmission.

Our thinking on this is, measure how much oil comes out, and if its less than 5l, it was too low, then fill up with 5l of new fluid and see if its fixed.

Jeep are telling me there is no drain plug on the transmission, but I was under the car the other day, and it bloody looks like there is one, can anyone confirm if this is right or not?  Jeeps way of changing the oil is to drop the pan, fit a new seal etc and then fill through the filler which is under the bonnet.  I didnt dare ask how much they wanted for doing this.

Anyone got any thoughts or suggestions on doing the transmission oil replacement and not getting the main dealer to do it?

Its fixed, TCM located under the transmission tunnel drivers side, need to remove the centre console.

Un plugged the old TCM and put the replacement one in.

Powered car back up and job done. 1mile up the road the engine management went off and now running perfectly. All in all £100 to fix.

Awesome result!  Glad you got it sorted for the same price as getting the car plugged into the computer at Jeep   :icon_super:  Did you not have to get it connected to a DRB to do some sort of pairing with the new unit?  Was the centre console easy to get out?

I've just started the search (no hits on ebay) for a TCM through the spares parts network and see if there is one out there somewhere.  I'll post a message up on the wanted boards here too, fingers crossed for a £100 fix.

make sure if you are using ebay to search , you put in jeep 2.7 crd breaking, I have seen a few on there under that.

It was plug and play I beleive.

You are correct Rob, plug and play.

Yes search for the CRD not the TCM, as there are no results under TCM.

Good plan guys, did an ebay search for the 2.7 breaking, and voila, a few came up.

Jay, I need to ask a favour - the guy at one of the breakers yards thinks he's got a 52 plate TCM, but the Jeep's been dismantled, so its all just bits in the back of his van at the moment.  He needs a picture to make sure he's got the right unit - would you be able to take a picture of the unit that came of your MIL's truck and send it to me so I can send it to him?  I havent looked into how to take the centre console out of mine yet, and i'm away with work for a few days, and dont want to miss this unit if its right!

What's your direct email address mate and I will do it now. Centre console is easy, just 10 screws. I can always talk you through it.
