lumpy 4.0
« on: October 19, 2012, 05:53:03 PM »

Hi all
Just had fitted a 2nd hand 02 sensor to my 99 xj 4.0 and on the way home it started acting up. Hesitation when going up hills, lumpy idle speed etc. Can I put it down to the 02 sensor?
Cheers

Yes a faulty 02 sensor can cause rough running, why did you change the old one was it doing the same kind of thing ?

If it's the upstream O2 sensor causing the problem the engine should run fine with the sensor unplugged.

Thanks for the info, Ive fitted a stainless borla manifold but the lambda mounts on the rear unlike standard which is on the front, which puts it straight in the firing line of the front uj, and after a 'froading trip the yellow check engine light came on, when I looked under the car the wires had been pulled out by what I can only assume was the rotation of the uj.
Because you need an extra 3 in of wire I bought a used sensor and added it to the old connector but it ran lumpy, so this morning I disconnected it and it ran fine.
Do you get problems chopping the wires as they are sensitive to voltage change?

You can actually get extension wires for O2 sensors as some people need a foot or more extra when they have custom manifolds on other vehicles. As long as the joints are good and wires not crossed there should be no problem. I'd only use the glue lined heat shrink for that type of wire join to keep it water proof.
