Calling all Gearbox and TC rebuilders
«

So ive been trying to find a company that will not only take out my gearbox and TC but to also give both a re-build/replace any worn bits inside. Phones loads of companies around near where i live but it seems the whole Jeep AX15 and NP231 TC with a Terra Low conversion seems to scare or put them off. Does anyone know or is willing to take on such a task? I'm prepared to dive some distance but certainly no further than B/Ham.
I know the GB and TC need some work as the noises are all related to Syncro's and perhaps bearings wearing out just dont fancy undertaking that kind of job myself.

The TC is no problem but the AX15 as it's Jap requires some special tools.

Have you tried Ace Gearboxes in Northampton? I'm not sure if they can do it but I chatted to a guy from there about axle rebuilds and he seemed to know his stuff and not be dismissive of Jeeps

Got mine done thro a mate at Peterborough Transmissions......cost £500 cash and was well mullared so needed loads but has been perfect since..... Also had another done from my previous YJ done.....sold it to another Birty and Tis stillgoing......
cheap option is Diesel AX15 cos its the same......and prob had an easy life.....less££££
transfer case..... Not much goes wrong.....but they don't like to run on water.....maybe do gearbox first....that will be where all the nasty noises are coming from......like a fried 2 nd gear and synchro and a mullared 5th which happens when you run without an axle re gear......
Just a thought.

Funnily enough going from 1st to 2nd is hard (especially when cold) so that could be sores with fully synthetic oil instead of what the dealer recommends. And 5th synchro is deffo in need of some TLC.
The TC might just need a bearing kit but as its going to be on a bench I wouldn't mind it being checked over just in case, its got any issues and might even get them to change the chain.
Called that place in Northampton as per James recommendation and will see what they come back with

Gost a quote from the place in Northampton and just want to confirm if im being ripped off..
Cost of Gearbox = £695 + VAT
Fitting = £275 + VAT
Total raping charge = £1164.00 inc VAT !!!!!
There are plenty of AX15's on ebay (you pays your money) might have to consider this as an alternative.
Oh and just to strip and inspect the TC they wanted £150 + VAT

What fluid is currently in the gearbox? Current Aisin-Warner recommendation/dealer fill is fully synthetic 10W-30 motor oil, which seems to work well for many. I use Redline MTL which seems to be better than the 10W-30 from what I've read, and my rough changes before using it went away completely.

get a used gearbox.....that is too expensive.... Put current tc on used gearbox and run as is for a while until you know tc is shafted as well.
Tis only a morning to drop tc really easy ..... Stuff on You Tube to show you what to do.....
As for gearbox will make a call to morrow to see if back door operations at Peteborough Transmissions are still on,advantage of having sick gearbox out of vehicle is you might have to wait 2 weeks or so for the guy to get around to it... But as I said £500 cash is better than what you were quoted + the Tory raping....
Just my 2 cents as usual.....

Think my first option is to change both the GB and TC oil (was only done last year but used Stealers standard diff and GB oils) So i might try the Redline MTL as ive nothing to loose.
And Jez if you could ask your mate ill be very grateful
Been on fleabay and found this one, could one of you guys confirm if it will be ok to fit as im not sure of the spline count?

Rich the part no. on the first box is from a 1997-1999 XJ but should fit as i think they are the same just different part numbers. The second should be the better box fitted to a TJ, box is a 3550 i think. Part no. should be 52104 388ac but I think the clutch needed is different on these.

Rich, just get a diesel XJ /ZJ box. Swap over the rear housing (6 bolts) with your current box and throw it in. I've had a couple and only paid £75 for each. Makes sense to get a clutch kit too. If yours is worn, fit it. If not, stick it on Ebay.
Only special tools you'll need are an external spline socket (can't remember which size
) and a kettle

The kettle is so you can make ME coffee. I'll lend a hand
. You pay travelling expenses though

go with what Paul suggests....Tis good
Went with a NV 3500 cos I got it cheap......( fire damage) and yes they are stronger with a lower 1st and higher 5th...
But in the real world AX15 is fine behind 4 litres

Socket size for the top two bolts on the bell housing is e-12 torx I believe, but a 10mm 12 point socket can be used if necessary. I've also heard best way to get to them is to drop the transmission slightly and go over the top with about three foot of extensions, and undo them first.

Pretty sure I've got a set of those sockets if you or Paul haven't and you want to borrow them.

The plan is I've got my hands on a good GB (it comes with a standard TC) not that ill be sing it. Going to have it delivered to FTE where Steve is going to change the GB and overhaul the TC (bearings and shit)
I know it's not the cheapest option but at least I don't fuck my back up in the process.

But what's really fucked me off about some companies that say they do all types of transmission, you tell them the make and model and you know by they way they say, I'll get back to you with some prices and they never do. Why can't people just say No I'm not interested! And save me wasting everyone's time.
