Started the lift because I couldn't wait. Came across a problem. Got the new springs and shocks I. But the axle won't turn back the right way. Seems like its twisting. Stuck in a bit of a rut here.

Anyone from South Wales able to shed some knowledge as this is my first and I'm a bit out of my depth!

Cheers

What size lift is it?

Did you get new lower control arms with it most kits over +2" come with longer lower arms, if not why have you undone the lowers from the axle?

You might find it easier if you take the springs and shocks back off, re connect the control arms and then re fit the springs and shocks.

First disconnect your sway bar links, that might help getting you lower control arms back on a bit easier

Do I spot coil spacers, what lift you putting on (height), do you need the coil spacers?.

5" lift. I've got adjustable lowers. I disconnected the lowers to drop the axle more because I clouldnt get the springs in. There 3" lift springs with a 2" spacer. . I will be running 33" when I sort this mess out. Plus I'm only using standard trolley jacks. Think I need bigger jacks.

To be honest thought I'd be able to do it, I've just rushed into it.

Thats a lot of lift for 33's, I would loose the spacers

What have you got sorted for the prop & transfer case drop / engine spacers ?

Nothing as yet. Didn't really think I would need the transfer drop. But it's not a problem il get them fitted as soon as the lift is on.

I take that the lift you've got is a standard 3" lift, ie shocks and springs..  You might find with the additional 2" spacers that your shocks are to short..  Other things you might need to look at is extended brake and axle breather lines, as 5" will stretch them for sure, to mention just a few issues from this sort of lift...

As a wild idea - take out the 2" spacers as the 3" lift with 33" tires will work, and if you want a bit more lift, fit a 1.25" body a 1" motor lift..  This will also help with aligning the drive shaft angle, then you don't need the transfer-case drop.. So in total you'll end up with a 4.25" lift, and sure the Jeep will cope with it much better..

Well, just a thought...

Thanks for the info, the reason why I've gone with this setup, because I chap I spoke to had this setup in his.

I'm going to get the shocks and springs out tonight. Gonna buy a bigger jack aswell. See what I sort.

You can't actually do this with an XJ, as they use a uniframe as opposed to the separate chassis that a TJ uses!  :003:

OK.

This is going to sound like I'm the harbinger of doom, but you need to know what's in your future.  If you do this right, you'll end up with a well sorted and capable off road monster.  do half a job and you're gonna want to torch it within weeks.

You will certainly need a big lift to get 33" tyres under an XJ the 3" lift on it's own isn't going to do it.  To stand any chance of fitting the lift without hours of pain I'd suggest you get the springs and shocks back off and fit the control arms first.  That will get the axle back under control and make it easier to line everything up.  Then fit the springs and last of all the shocks.  If it's a 5" lift, you're gonna need longer sway bar drop links at the very least so disconnect those while you're doing the work, otherwise they'll make life difficult for you; then consider fitting disconnects.

You will certainly need a TC drop kit and maybe a SYE and new prop.  You can sometimes get away without them on smaller lifts but you're gonna get god awful vibration and eat UJs without something to get the driveline back in alignment.

Then you'll need to sort brake lines and all the other bits you forget need doing.
.
Oh and then to get some sensible gearing back you'll probably need to re gear your axles (or swap them out for the axles from a 2.5 petrol XJ).

I've got extended brake lines anyway, I'm going to remove all the stuff tonigh and do as you said Chris.

Just need to get the measurements for the adjustable control arms.

The SYE will be coming in a couple of weeks so that's sorted.

Got a mate coming round to lend a hand so should get it sorted.

I'll shut up then- sound's like you're sorted.  :greggmo:

Do you have some sway bar disconnects planned?  I know there are some folks out there who say they run without a front sway bar, but having driven a lifted XJ without one, I wouldn't want to do more than a few miles on the road.

You will need to consider a re-gear too with 33" tyres.  The truck will be gutless without one on the road and have no engine braking off road.  sorry if you've got all this in hand, I'm not trying to teach ya to suck eggs!  Mine was JUST acceptable with 31s on standard ratios (but only just).

Haha I'm waiting for the upper control arms to arrive, and yeah I have quick disconnects. Il be taking away the rear sway bar all together.

I got all the stuff just rush into it last night and ended up in right old pickle lol.

Really appreciate the advice thou, second jeep, first lift.

I was just really worried last night that I fucked something up because of the angle the axle is, but when I though about it when the weight of the jeep was in the springs is was pressing down and making the bend, when I get the wheels back on suppose it will straighten out.

Does anyone know how the get the correct length of adjust on the control arms?

You're suppliers of the control arms might have the details.......

Otherwise it's a case of measuring or knowing original wheelbase....... Cos when you lift with factory arms the wheelbase gets shorter as the arms angle become greater..... So you extend to
Get back original wheelbase.....or greater......
Getting info to start you off from the suppliers is the first step....unless some Birty here has done the same lift with same products.

If ya stuck..... I would extend new arms 3/4 inch longer than standard and see how ya go......you can always tweak either way from there.....
