and since my steering box managed to pull through the chassis box, we have been trying to beef it up somewhat:

I've just been measuring up around my steering box for the same thing. What size bolts did you drill the box out for?

same as standard, but I got some longer ones locally and die'd the threads longer as the new ones had shanks, the tube inserts are absolutly the same id size as the shank od so there should be no slop

Thanks Will, I thought maybe you'd drilled the box out and planned to put nuts on the end. I like the idea of having more thread on there.

Willo, pulling box through chasis is impressive! From the pictures looks to be well beefed up. One thought after twice mounting a steering box in the last month, did you use 3 or 4 mounting bolts?

Its still in the mock up stages using the existing as pulled through holes, so box us in same place. At the miment it is located with 3 bolts but to add the fourth is a piece of cake

Any rate, its good to see you getting your Jeeping Mojo back... And if its of any help, I picked up 7.5m of TJ chassis sized box section few weeks, sure I can spare a bit...

Willo it would be best to get some stronger bolts. The markings on the heads indicate those are only grade 5 or standard bolts. For holding your steering on I would trust grade 8 high tensile bolts much better.

I've seen it recommended to drill through and put nuts on the bolts. I was thinking of doing this with 12mm bolts (10.9 or 12.9) but it would mean also grinding a flat surface on the box which would cut into the strengthening 'ribs' on the box so was uncertain about it at first thought. Only going metric because of ease of sourcing replacements for me.

Willo get some cap heads from your local hydraulic people, grade 12 so stronger than the box and freely available in UNC sizes due to there prevalence in the hydraulic world.
If you struggle let me know what size you need

there's a place near me that sells unf and metric grade 8 bolts lose by the bolt

Last night a personal Jeeping milestone was reached, I managed to half set up and install my front ring and pinion. Man Alive you need some patience.

I was struggling a bit with good gear pattern or correct backlash, and am now fairly certain all i need to do is move one waffer thin shim from the right to the left to end up with an ok gear pattern and correct backlash.

I also found that a big Geeee clamp will suffice as an axle spreader

Here is a pic of the gear mesh on the drive side with backlash a bit too big

the studs for my jana diff covers are also super helpful for resting the carrier on just before you try to wrangle the bugger into the case

Well done, I've used a g clamp too.

The bloody shims are a pain, my Chrysler rear axle has spin adjusters and it saves so much messing around.

fortunatly the pinion depth was already set correctly so I only had to do the carrier bearings shimming in order to set the backlash and gear meshing.

Its not a half day job though is it...what a pita, That being aid I am stoked that I a) understand it (kinda) Thanks to Billavista, and b) had a good go at it

I allowed a weekend per axle because rushing just doesn't help with this kind of job. For me anyway

When I do axles I just say I will ring when its ready that way when it just does not want to rightyou can shutthe worksop door on it for a few hours to get ya head back in to it
