pros and cons of anti roll bars
« on: October 18, 2013, 07:51:20 PM »

Having had a few sweet trips out in the XJ with its almost 3in lift I borrowed a 31 for test fit and found it a little tight, just like my wallet, so I was thinking of ditching the anti roll bars and fitting some disconnects on the front. I cant afford a set of 31s at the mo so I was thinking of trying something different??

How would removing the ARB affect the truck for daily driving and handling on road?

That depends on the rear springs if you have heavy duty ones you won't notice it but if you have soft flesh ones you will get a little body roll but not enough to scare unless you drive it like an F1 driver

Personally I prefer the anti roll bar on the rear, for the front disconnects are the logical answer.

The simple way is to try it. Drop the rear anti roll bar off and drive around for a week or so. If it feels too boat like, put it back on.

I run disconnects up front on the TJ and no rear anti roll bar and drive to suit how the Jeep handles.

For 90% off road would you remove the rear ARB and just refit for the MOT??

Not sure it's an MOT requirement. I suppose, if fitted, bushes etc need to be good but have never been picked up on it for not having one.

Front  - Stick some Disconnects on. No question. :icon_super: :icon_super:

Rear - Ditch it. But with two caveats.
a) It's a Jeep not a sports car so drive it like a Jeep.
b) If you tow heavy stuff (caravans, fully loaded trailers etc.) I'd keep it on.

IMHO if your running big enough tyres the that negates the usefulness of the ARB while on the road anyway so why bother with it, disconnects are great compromise but just anther thing to break/get jammed up with mud.

MOT is another question, I'll defer to those that know better but years ago I was asked my my Niva didn't have a front ARB and I convinced the tester it was an option and not all had them  :icon_winkle:

now you told me that if they arent on there then its not an MOT failure, and as I noticed not a jot of difference on the Chief they are coming off

Boris has no anti roll bars on him and he drives on the road just fine but then no matter what you do to an XJ it will always handle like a greased baked bean. Just drive accordingly

As has been said, if the bars aren't there then they can't be tested and so not an MOT failure
