Now I've got a trailer I'm paranoid it's going to get nicked. Currently it's chained from the a-frame to a tree with a thick motorbike security chain and shutter lock padlock. It's also blocked in by the WK but this isn't possible to leave in place all the time.

What other items are useful for security and what are a waste of time? I've driven off with a trailer that had a wheel clamp fitted by mistake and it just popped off so I'm not convinced they are any good, maybe just a visual thing

Trackers?

Take the wheels off? It's what most caravans seem to do

Ok, point taken about the wheels but it's going to be a pain in the arse if I'm using it frequently.

It seems a decent brightly coloured hitchlock and the chain should deter less determined thieves.

Has anyone used a tracker for trailers, plant or cars before? Any DIY / cheaper versions?

To be honest, if it chained with a decent chain to a tree, got a hitch lock on it and maybe a wheel clamp for more visual effect its pretty secure without been behind a gate.

I would be happy with all of that.

Our caravan is on the drive with similar.

I am a wheels off fan......... They're fecked then........ Just don't store them in an unlocked shed 10 foot away

I am lucky......or unlucky......

my drive goes at 90 degrees to get in and its a bitch to get out in one without lots of faffing and a second set of eyes..... And the Ram is parked across its exit.......

however if like me you only use the trailer a few times a year then keeping weight off the tyres and out of the sun will help the longevity......

I think the bollard(s) are a great idea and I'll do this when I'm building the extension but for now everything is a bit temporary and likely to be dug up as part of the works.

Wheels off is just going to wind me up if I'm using it frequently but if it gets parked up I'll give it a go.

Getting it on and off the drive is a pig so that might help put the pikeys off too (90 degrees, up a slope and off a narrow road with parked cars opposite - not fun doing that for the first time holding up traffic and being watched).

I've seen trackers fitted to skips and containers, does anyone know anything about these or is my paranoia going too far think about fitting one?

Do as much as you can; eg wheels off if possible. A friend has just had is Ifor Williams nicked after 3 weeks of ownership. Stolen in daylight from concealed location. gates broken and motorbike lock cut. Thinks someone must've seen it out on the rd and followed him home

Thing is they don't really care if they rip gates off/walls down getting it out

also hitch locks are OK - but rather than a tow ball they use a spike and just drop I on and pull it out, until they get it some where that they have time to remove the lock - if it flies off while towing it - well they need to find another to nick

If they want it they will find away to get it, I know of one trailer and several caravans that were nicked from a secure compound using a hi-ab and a lo-loader. Basically make it as noisey as possible to nick and insure it - try approaching horse box insurer. Should also cover you from theft when away from home.

bulldog hitchlocks are good a blanking plate stops them dropping on a spike plus they can be used to lock the hitch onto the car stopping the trailer being lifted while out n parked up ie on the services

Thanks, insurance is the next thing to arrange. I figure some security measures and common sense and then if it does still get nicked at least I'll have it covered.

Homebase CCTV camera looking down on it with a BIG PIR floodlight.
Connect to any old PC that gives at least 12 hours recording time, then you can film the barstewards!
Just remember they will have had loads of practice so will probably park their tranny van down the road a bit, carry/man-handle the thing away so they make as little racket as possible. So you still may not get a shot of their reg number unless your camera(s) are looling both ways up the street.
Still, it's damn difficult for the coppers to go and fetch it back from Mr. P Kiey, of No 1, No Fixed Abode St. though innit.
OR
Put it on axle stands with no air in the tyres and an old mobile phone (ringer turned off) in a tupperware box underneath charged by a solar trickle charger hidden in the reverse light.
Someone once told me this was nearly as good as a tracker as the plod can triangulate it by dialing it.

It would be fun to film them moving it down thew slope to the road by hand - it's fookin heavy and a steep short slop onto the road - I might set up CCTV just for that

Not a a bad idea. The £250 from you've been framed should cover the insurance excess too.
