Next upgrade on Bulldog tech info req please:

Basically the heater is shit in the Chief - if I wanna use it in the winter at all I need to get it sorted (or alternatively employ a small phillipino child to continously wipe the windscreen with a towel)

So what needs doing?

The fan couldn't move a dust mote and the heat option is just a word rather than an actual operation.

it means you get heat, how you install it will be the problem

There are generally only two reasons that a heater performs poorly...an inadequate fan setup (which you have already identified), or lack of hot coolant flowing through the matrix (probably a blockage in the system). If the coolant flow is free and easy, the temp within the matrix will almost as high as your engine temp ( it's only a miniature version of the main radiator).

I've had similar issues with older vehicles in the past (usually those built and operated with water as a coolant before the days of this fancy stuff we use now). You wouldn't believe the amount of rusty coloured shit some of them held.

Another thing could be (and that makes three reasons), is the temp control, which is only a flow controller (tap), not turning or opening correctly.

hoses in and out......I had one heater not working due to in hose blocked with thick rust and debris as Bazz suggested.
also the heater has a small radiator.....that can go.....had one in a Transit van start leaking all over my feet......so maybe that......
Some older vehicles can have Heater turned off under hood so water bypasses heater, so worth a look.

had a trawl on UKJ links and it seems to concur with you guys - I have to take it all apart

quite believably for me I had spare heater matrix things but got fucked off with them being to big and hanging around so passed them on

First place (and the easiest) is to disconnect the two hoses which go through the firewall to the heater....attach hose pipe to either of the male pipes and see if water flows freely through the matrix...then try it in reverse until you get a full on flow coming out of the opposite (unconnected) pipe. Probably best to do this on the lawn, rather than in the garage.

The reason I suggest starting this way?...if the heater matrix(radiator) doesn't get hot, when the engine is at correct operating temp, then the fan can only blow what's available.

Its simply because that 401 is so efficient it wastes no energy as heat and it all comes out as power thats all

I swear the engine power from my tj 4 popper is converted more into heat and not motion: i reckon i could griddle on the windscreen at times its simply awesome in the winter.

Agree with the above heater matrix is where first look should be; also are you getting excessive moisture in the cab; could be leaking?

Quick question BD...how warm is the airflow at the outlet when on max heat? I understand that the fan is pretty piss poor, but as I said before, it will only blow what it's getting. Another thing to check is the airflow through the matrix...I've had them blocked with leaves and other crap! As above, the fan can only blow what it's receiving...blocked fins = poor air supply, blocked matrix = poor heat result. Overall result is a heater just like yours.

flushed thru the matrix, wasnt really too bad, and its still shite, but the heat is there, its def the fan that is utter wank - if you stick ya hand over the slots it feels like a mosquito fart

Now my pickets aren't that deep at the moment and i stupidly sold my moab heater but bravo on the idea - three 12v fan heaters and some sticky back plastic and boom - instant windows demisting power
