What road tyres ?
« on: March 24, 2014, 11:56:31 AM »

OK, the tyres on my new (to me) jeep GC need changing.
It's a 2004 2.7 CRD (WK ?)
It'll be used on the road primarily (50 mile a day commute) with any off roading being unintentional for the time being.
The current size is 235/65 x 17
What's the best tyres for that sort of usage ?

I'm running Michelin Latitude Alpin 265/70 x R16 on my heavy old Patrol for the last 5.5 years, quietest, best wearing tyres I've ever owned. Tad over 50K kms and no signs of wear! M+S rated and I leave them on all year round.

I bought a set of wheels + General Grabber UHP's all in from Nomadz.

I thought it was a bloody good tire.

I'm actually quite impressed with the Goodyear All-Weather tyres that came stock on the WK - wear is minimal and they are good in wet and snow. Crap on anything muddy or slippy but they are a road tyre.

Adding to what I posted above, I fitted new Goodyear Wranglers (all weather version) to my KJ and they were fine...quite a bit cheaper than the Michelins too! Sadly, I didn't get to find out how long they last.

BFG A/T are the scariest tyres I've ever had on the TJ. In dry conditions they were much like any other tyre. In the wet they would slide all over the place.

I love my BFG A/Ts, but they have made the XJ a little tail-happy in the wet. I drive in 4wd now!

BFGs are a VERY hard compound, excellent wear, and excellent anal relaxant/fun in the wet. (Dependant on the size of yer gentlemans vegetables) :D

Have you looked at General Grabber AT's?

Nice mix of both.

It's between the Grabbers and the Goodyear Wranglers.
It's about £125 for the Goodyear A/W's and £140 for the Grabber AT's.
As I don't really need the off road capability of the AT's I'll probably go for the Goodyears......

Probably a good choice, but don't quote me...they are, however, a very quiet tire and always performed well for me, even though I only had them on for just under 20K miles.

I've done 40k miles on a set that were worn when I got the Jeep, got to test them a few times in snow and were good and have done plenty of miles in the wet with no issues. I'll be going ATs next but for a road tyre they're not bad.
