Am I right in thinking that you could get TJs from the factory in the States with rear discs?

Common upgrade for XJs is to use the ford explorer rear axle but these are leaf spring fitment so might not be an option if you have springs

There was a lot of talk about the disc conversion on an XJ not so long ago. The conversion is the same for either.

I had the Ford type set up supplied by Teraflex and hated it. The brakes worked fine but the hand brake was useless. Last year I installed modifed land rover discs and calipers from a transit van and everything works as it should.

The ZJ and Explorer kits all use the little hand brake shoes and these dont do mud or large tires very well.

I'll do a write up on my attempt at Transit calipers in the next fortnight. Have got ZJ discs at the moment and not that impressed but they do work and they are discs - you can have my old bits if you want to go this route.

Later TJs did come with discs and ABS, 2002 on I think  :017:

I did the Stu offroad conversion. With an old cherokee axle ZJ supplying the parts....... It was no better at stopping the 35s than the drums....... The discs just didn't fill up with mud so were easier to keep clean.... as usual the handbrake only worked at MOT time :icon_twisted:

But was this still with the shitty little hand brake shoes on the inside of the disc?

KJs have them same set up...virtually useless handbrake, although under braking they worked fine.

From my research, I think it was only Rubicons from 2003+.
Mum's TJ is a 2005, and has rear drums and ABS

Just to clarify what I posted above, my KJ had discs all round, with the handbrake incorporating the small shoes inside the rear ones. The vehicle never failed an MOT in the four years I owned it, but I never trusted that handbrake!

Get a big brake kit for the front or do both. The ZJ discs aren't much more powerful than stock drums that are working right

Similar idea to a WJ conversion but less work and no change to steering.

That's wot I got. Expensive but good bit of kit. Downside is you have to take about a 1/16" off the hub bearing to fit the ford disc.
