One problem solved, next please !
« on: April 28, 2014, 09:47:23 AM »

Having had the bushes fixed by the dealer (only took 3 weeks....) I find the next problem.
Occasionally there's a smell of hot transmission oil from the Jeep.
It's fine on local journeys, slightly more prevalent on the commute to work (25 mile motorway trip) but after doing 25 miles in commuter traffic the other day, it reeked of it.
There's no noticeable problems other than the smell, the gearbox seems to work ok.
Any ideas ?

Check the pipes where they go to & from the radiator for cooling, I have had these weep at both the radiator end & up above the transfer case skid plate on the TJ.

A little oil on / near the exhaust when it gets upto temperature dont half make a pong

OK thanks, I'll have a look at that.
I did have a quick look for an obvious leak the other day, all I could see was something over the front of the rear propshaft that looked it could possibly be a leak ?

Transmission fluid on the propshaft such as you have seen gets flung about all over the place when the prop spins up.
The stuff that ends up landing directly on the exhaust gets burned off with a fair old reek and the stuff that coats the underbody above the exhaust system gets a good cook-up like an old chip shop when you park, and you know what that stinks like. Even worse if you are in slow traffic I suppose.
I recon the cause is a knackered transfer case output seal, if you are lucky it's only the seal and the shaft is still OK.
