XJ 2.5 TD Coolant Leak
« on: June 02, 2014, 07:30:06 PM »

Evening all,

Been lurking and searching for a while, but need some help with my XJ.

I recently bought a 1997 XJ 2.5TD Sport with roughly 100k miles. The previous owner has looked after it meticulously, but on the (120 mile) drive home, the low coolant light came on.

The temp gauge was fine in traffic and on the motorway, so I carried on to home and topped up the coolant with approx 1 litre.

Until last night, I couldn't get the light off - however one of the pins on the expansion tank/bottle level sensor was not seating in the plug correctly. I moved it back in line and it immediately turned the light off.

On the way to work today the light came back on and has stayed on since - regardless of how much fluid is in the bottle.

I've also noticed it's leaving a small spot of water under it wherever it's park. Having just let the engine idle, I had a look underneath and there's a pipe (approx 10mm diameter) hanging down the front of the block that is constantly dripping water/coolant.

I know a reasonable amount, so to me it looks like a breather/overflow of some kind - however, it drips constantly whilst the engine is running and for probably an hour or so (at a reduced rate) after I turn it off. Is there a fix for this? I'm having to top it up every day at the moment and it would be nice if it held the fluid for a bit longer.

Any help much appreciated!

Good point, although mine doesn't have a/c. I just tried running it with the heater in the neutral temp zone and it didn't make a difference.

I've attached a picture of the pipe, it's in the middle of the pic.

Thanks for your help

the pipe at the front of the block is from the waterpump

looks like it may be the original - as when changed the pipe is not normally refitted :icon_rolleyes:

Will be about £35/40 from a local motor factors - there are 2 sizes, take yours off and measure the impellor size - my little independent parts place gets them in around 2 hours delivered to them.

Thanks chaps - I've got some K Seal on the way and will see if that does the trick.

If not, I'll replace the water pump.

Thanks for your help

k-seal or liquid metal will temporarily seal and warp in the heads while you save up for the repair.

check the header bottle for discolouration and pressurising, guaranteed indication of a warped head.

Thanks for your help.

Bottle appears to be clear and a couple of tests indicate the heads are fine at the moment. The light is now out and has been and the coolant level stabilised.

I'll keep a close eye on it...

Thanks again

I would recommend changing the water pump - it is on its way out (water leaking through it shows this and the water will now have started corroding the bearing increasing its demise - even if the gloop has now stopped the water)

My first one had a small leak from this pipe when I bought it, the pump let go 2 weeks later in the middle of a woods in North Yorkshire.........

Thats a good point too, Jeeps can be very possesive at times. Could be it's just running you round in circles for a bit to let you know who's boss, after all you do depend on it as a daily ride already!
Maybe you should buy it a present or something, a good wash and wax, an oil change, a nice high lift jack or perhaps even a new water pump!   :icon_winkle:

My Jeep doesn't appreciate when I do these things. I gave it a wash, polish, polish protection, cleaned the inside, oil change, and a new roof rack. It responded by spitting out an idler pulley and seizing the brakes on!
