Hi Peeps,
I have had a 2" budget boost fitted to my 98 TJ (31" tyres). It doesn't ride at all well,crashing over bumps and potholes.
Took the lift off and hey presto ! much better ride ! If I put a "proper" lift kit on,springs, shocks etc what kind of ride can I expect ? Really want to lift it by 2", as its my d/d would like a modicum ( ie standard) level of comfort !! Don't want to spend moola and have a worse ride !

You will probably have a better ride due to new springs and shocks of the correct length for the lift

Old man emu 2" lift will be perfect for your requirements.

dont be tempted by rough country, they are cheap but the name says it all

A budget lift shouldn't really affect the ride quality that much unless some other component is knackered.

OME is probably the best for road used TJs .Also make sure you fit a SYE and get the angles correct to the rear diff to ensure you have no vibes either on the throttle or on lift off....
It will drive you mad otherwise......
That and roll bar disconnects and you'll have a great dual purpose Jeep.

If by budget lift you mean spacers in between the springs and the upper spring seats then I agree with what's already been said it should not effect your ride to the extent you describe and would suggest something else is wrong.
OME is probably one of the better if not the best small lift kits ..... But you are paying for what you get. In my experience you really don't need the SYE on a TJ until you start going over 2 inches and this would certainly take it out of budget territory.

You might just have worn shocks that not really behave badly at stock height but don't cope
with the lift

your caster angle is too shallow,
have you had the steering re tracked
judging by the hassle I've just been having, the rear spring is curved, front half of it will be compressed, the other the rear half will be stretched, resulting in a truely shit ride
I relocated the spring perches on the chassis and the axle, a lot of work,
don't even mention the rear prop 
give me an XJ any day

Oh yes .....the banana shaped rear Spring......nothing money or skill sets yet to be learnt cannot fix.....

And then there is the geometry gone to bollix when you lift and effectively shorten your wheelbase


Oh the deep joy of realising you now need a long arm kit........

Tis why in the US they 'go Low'..... After decades of stuff on stilts.....

1" body lift and trim the body to fit the 31s or maybe 33s ...... What will make it an effective off-roader will be the diff locks and the subtle winch on the front so you can get stuck further down the trail.

Thanks for all the info guys,I will have a crawl round underneath and check everything out ! I like the idea the shocks might not be up to the mark with the pucks fitted,'cos if the shocks need swapping anyway, I met as well splash out a bit more and……….
