Ok, next thing on the list, after fuel tank saddle renewed, front calipers and discs renewed , etc etc etc, is, gearbox, it's on its way out, slips between 2nd and 3rd, I will search out a second hand 3 speed, is the 3 speed on the 4.0 Cherokee the same?, only, there must be more of them in the breakers than Tj's???

Probably just needs the bands adjusting. The XJ box is completely different.

If you are interested I have a Torqueflite 727 for sale that was altered and fitted in my TJ. They normally have a 666 but after I had had a few problems I moved to the bigger stronger box. The box was working fine when it was taken out and will bolt straight into a TJ and is complete with torque converter and flex plate which was redrilled for the 727 torque converter. I fitted it with an aluminium sump which is slightly larger to increase the amount of oil it holds. It still fitted in the TJ without problem.
The box is a little larger in diameter although the same length. My TJ has a one inch body lift.
I live near Oxford.

Very interested, so it will fit straight into a bog standard tj?, if so,,how much?

I thought £250 - just one thing to bear in mind is that it doesn't have torque converter lock up. This never caused a problem but something to be aware of.

Sorry got it wrong but never the less the 727 is a bigger stronger box and caused me no problems where as the earlier boxes did.

To be honest.... The front near side brake has now siezed on!!!!, I'm am going to sort out the box, but can only do one thing at a time!!!!

I don't know if your car is already an auto Lord T but as I converted mine from auto to manual I also have the shift lever, cable, kick down cable, brake pedal etc and also a separate oil cooler that goes in front of the radiator grill and a temperature gauge for the auto box. The sender is already installed in the box. Also if it's a manual you will need a new front prop which I also have as they are a little longer than the manual. Not sure about the rear prop as I changed to an extra short sye at the same time.

I fitted the AW4 from a cherokee into my TJ. you need to study and collect the parts on stu olson's site. Its one of the best thing i have done on my tj, especially coupled with the RA Designs wintershifter which means you can a) hold it in gear and b) flatshift

ShameXJs  are strong money as getting one that had kissed a tree would get you the parts you need. Quite fancy that conversion myself......but need to research the YJ interface.

I've been involved in three AW4 swaps into TJ's, Willo's AW4 came from me, I was lucky enough to find three 98 to 00 plate Cherokee's for little money, all sub £500, one for £250 because nobody else wanted to drive to St Ives! Can't get'em for love or money now.  Very easy swap especially if you buy coloured coded wiring for the harness.  The last one used completely salvaged XJ bits including cooler and pipe work. Went for 98 to 00 as wanted full auto, TCM controlled shifting. My advice is, if you are going to do it go hunting for a Cherry now! Tim give me a bell or speak to me at Breakout. I agree with Willo, AW4 work very well in TJs.
