It might still be a UJ but.......................?????
« on: May 26, 2006, 11:27:31 AM »

OK.

I got into Barbie this morning to go to work.  Started her up, pulled away from the house (in 2WD) and there were a couple of loud clunks from underneath.

Humm..........I thought.

All sounded fine until I backed off the gas....................clunk, clunk, clunk clunk......etc.

OK from the sound of it, I guessed it was a UJ in the rear prop, so I went round the block and parked up again.

I've dropped the rear prop and gone for a short spin in in 4WD part time (now FWD!) and the noise has gone.

Here's the best bit though.......................I can't see anything wrong with the UJs on the rear prop.

I guess one of them could still be f**ked without being able to see with it off the truck, but .............

Any Ideas???

Put it back on.... :)

If there is no play on either UJ's in any axis, They run smooth in all axis, then it's unlikely they would make such a loud CLUNK....

I am interested to hear Manda's thoughts on the SY...

now you have the prop off, check the rear diff

jack the rear up & try turning the yolk by hand & see if it binds or has a tight spot

also, try chucking the prop back into the tc & turn by hand in neutral, see if theres any slack

Right.

I've jacked the back up,  the diff feels fine.  No tight spots or 'grity' bits.  All smooth.

Tried turning the transfer case by hand.  Same again, smooth.  Splines are well greased too.  The only thing to report is a little slack in it.  But this is the same to the front prop as well, about a 1/4" of slack in both shafts.  I'm not sure how that would cause a constant knocking though :?

Maybe a bit of a clunk on pulling away, but not a constant knocking like a f**ked UJ. :?:

chuck the prop back on & see if it still does it.............might be just one of those "one-off jeep things"..........

It was probably some scroat lying under it trying to nick bits - knocking on floor as you drove off dragging him along .....

Going to buy a f'ing angle grinder tonight. Guess I'll need it at some point else in jeep ownership!

If it stop's pissing down, I'll try again this weekend.... if not, I won't.

Got another Punch event the second week in June, but don't think I'll get it all fitted by then.... Still another 2 weeks for the cable and disc conversion at the moment, till they push it back again.
