What paint to put on a CJ7?
« on: January 20, 2017, 12:26:23 PM »

I am about to get my old CJ7 repainted.

I fancy doing it in its original colour - 1979 Bordeaux metallic, Paint Code 9P.

But the panels are not exactly perfect, so maybe I should be going for a matt or semi-mat finish? And maybe a different colour? Any suggestions?

And paint has changed so much since I last painted a car... eg. what is this water based stuff?

I need it to be cheap, hard wearing (a bit of green laneing in its future...) and easy to repair.

What paint should I be getting?

Cellulose is what I use. Also cos it's the only thing I know how to spray.
I get it from eBay and it's a company in Ireland.
They will match stuff and you can get semi Matt that I used on my Jeep and it hides the undulations.

About £12 a litre and then the thinners so for about £20-40 depending how much paint you plough on.....tis a cheap job.

And you'll always have stuff for repainting a damaged panel. :icon_super:

At least that's the way I roll......(unfortunate word to use but there you go) :hysterical:

I resprayed the CJ in my own garage with water based metallic and a hard wearing clear coat to finish.

At least with water based you don't have to snort all the solvents and shorten yer life by 5 years.  The clear coat can take a beating and prevent trail rash.   (edit: yes, the clear coat was vile to spray)

I got my local Morelli branch (very, very helpful) in Bodmin to match a panel and source a paint to match the original factory colour.

I ended up with a ford USA colour I believe.

Ask Willo, it still looks the dogs dangelies. :icon_super:
