Hi again.


Just remembered that the CJ has a leak at the front of the rear differential. (AMC20 axle)


How difficult will this be to fix? Can I do it at home or do I need to find somebody?

Remove the prop, undo the pinion nut, take off yoke, change seal, put nut back on to exact spot it was before. Most difficult bit will be holding the yoke, I made a 'thing' to do that, but a stilsons might work. Nut is v tight, 250 ft lbs I think.

Check the axle breather tube isn't blocked as that cause the leak in the first place..

    Blocked breather, buggered UJ or out of balance/bent driveshaft can cause this seal to fail, but the breather is the usual culprit. The other two would normally tell you via a nasty vibration.   

A quick additional suggestion....a paint brush, small can of petrol and wash the leaking area around the seal area, then dry it off properly. Remove the diff end of the breather and give it a good blow through with compressed air until you're sure it's open and clear...the titty bit that goes into the diff housing can be done the same way...or with a toothpick. After a good trip, you will see if the leak persists...then you can go ahead and follow the above advice from 5536paulj, if needed. My bet is on the breather.

If you do choose to change it then i would heartily recommend that you find someone who has a decent impact gun then you wont need to hold the yoke to get the nut off and it will save on much swearing and scraping of knuckles.
It does need to be a very,very,very good impact gun though and not a cheapo one, think Snap on or a high end MIlwaukee or similar....

Those yolks can be a PITA to remove as well...a decent puller is the answer. Probably worth buying one anyway..they come in handy for so many other jobs on a Jeep.

I used a 3/4" drive 450ft/lb on mine and it didn't budge either

I ended up using a BFO bar and a lot of swearing to get mine off, also made up a yoke to hold the flange as I needed both hands and full body weight behind me😆😆

x2, welded a socket to a flat plate which then bolts to the yoke and has a hole big enough to fit a socket through, big bar on that jammed into the garage floor.

Then another long bar on the pinion nut and all of my weight to shift the nut...

I use a big stillsons then a big breaker bar - put stillsons on yoke and use wood to hold handle in place - then big breaker bar and pull on it hard - you are then not putting any load on the gears pr bearings - where if you use an impact gun you are

My first 1/2" breaker bar ended up bent like a banana  upgraded to a 1" bar and brute force and the nut finally gave in.

It reminded me of undoing/doing up the main gearbox nut in a mini, we use to Jack up a car and drop it back down on the gearbox to allow enough force to be applied. Scared me shitless the first time I did it.

Update: Both diffs done and working 


Made a tool out of an oil filter wrench and got a very big bar and a self propelled 17 stone weight...
