Shifter in `Park` problem
« on: June 28, 2006, 06:05:58 PM »

Only now and again when I leave my jeep (4.0 XJ) in Park and remove the keys it `locks` totally leaving me fiddling around for sometime trying to get the key to turn in the ignition. Obviously while i`m in this state i cannot move the lever anywhere and I`m sitting looking like an idiot going nowhere.
HaVE i got an ignition barrel problem? Or a steering lock problem. The steering lock doesn`t come on when this happens.
I`ll leave it in Neutral from now on and use the handbrake. Saves embarrassment

What year is your Jeep? '97 on barrels can jam when worn.

Yeah, sounds like it could be the ignition barrel then. You can get a new one made up to match your existing keys, the parts are about £50.
