OK folks, we are now in the position of having in our possesion two brand new skids, 1 each of the following.

Dont ask how we came to be in this position but suffice to say we now have a chioce of which one to fit, thoughts for & against either would be appreciated.

The noticeable difference is that the Rocky road (actually made by Skidrow) has small drain holes in the corners & seperate external brackets that hold it in place.

The Warn one is a complete one piece unit that comes with no bracketry or bolts for that matter & has far more & bigger drain holes.

If we can make the pubmeet (not sure if we are going away at the weekend) I'll bring em with us for scrutinising by those far more in the now than me.

Anyway, any pro's & cons ?

I have the warn one.... I've jacked the back end of the beast up using it... Reasonably easy to fit, and it tucks the tank up an inch too if I remember right.

Main advice is to be running on fumes when you fit it!

in fact, run out of petrol and get towed home....

Why not just by the 2004 Extreme Sport one from jeep, I think its only about 90 quid.

is the rocky road skid the one that goes over the existing or the type that replaces and raises the tank by 1", if its the latter you need a 1" body lift.

If you read the ad it tells you more.

I have a Kilby skid sitting in my dining room awaiting fitting. Replaces original and raises clearance by 1", pretty similar to the Warn one so i am told.

I may be wrong but i think the Warn is a replacement for the stock using the original straps giving an extra 1" clearance and the skid row bolts over the existing one but is easier to fit.

I have a tomken which is similar to skid row and am well pleased but knowing what i know now compared to then i would have the warn cos every inch counts and i would be more confident at having a go at fitting it..

Steve its the one that fits directly over the original, I ordered this thinking it would be easier to fit, however, having waited since early April for it & other stuff to arrive I gave up hope & ordered the Warn jobbie from Quadratec,that arrived two days later :shock:

Sods law decrees that stuff ordered at the begining of April after more e-mails than I care to remember & finally telling em weeks ago if they cant keep to one of the many promises they eventlually make (many e-mails later) to stick it where the sun dont shine.

Reasons I can deal with, piss poor comms & shite attitudes I will not. If it wasn't for the guy who owns the place (who was great I must stress)having to get involved I doubt they would do much business at all.

PS cant recomend Quadratec Highly enough, very good comms as well & if you ever order from Rocky Road speak to Glenn Wakefield if you can, top man.

Fit the warn one, it may take longer to fit, but it looks more substantial. When I fitted one similar to the warn I found a couple of ratchet straps, ammo boxes and trolley jacks made the fitting easier.

fit the warn. ive got this on mine very good bit of kit. just make sure your running on fumes as tank has to come out to fit it utilising origional fittings.

Oh, BTW. Those drain holes....

They're designed for the US to get the dust out. once you dunk it in mud, they are just like all the other drain holes.... Blocked!

I say Fit the Warn. You bash the tank enough that the extra inch makes all the difference. I've sat the back on a tree and all sorts... It's a weird thing when you say "That's okay, it's the tank guard" but it's true... after fitting the thing you really do know how solid it is. And then you don't worry about the tank anymore!

I can't find the writeup for the warn fitting I did, but this "Toys by Troy" writup is similar....

That plug underneath will just look like a ball of mud unless you are lucky. it's like some of the other plugs on the jeep where you have to slide a "Bar" out before you can disconnect it. it's worth spending the time a day or two before locating this and jetwashing it out as much as possible. Oh, and you WILL get mud in your eye while doing it

They give a good description at the top of page 2.

The TJ is off to Frogs island tomorrow to have an OME 2" lift kit fitted so I am gonna cheat if I can & get them to fit the Warn one all being well.

If this cunning plan comes off I feel a for sale ad comming soon for the Rocky Road / Skid Row jobbie :wink:

If you use the Vehicle mainly for offroad use, for ultimate performance, Fit a feul Cell/Tank in the rear behind seats. :lol:

Remove the tank underneith. It will solve the protection problem and give better departure angle, also enable you to clean and work on the rear axle much easier, and open up the window for major suspension and exhaust mods.

Its Something I have been thinking of for mine for a while and will do next year once I have the cash. Going to remove the rear seat and make a frame to fit inside behind front seats to house feul tank and loads of ancileries.
