Thinking ahead to when the boss's new bumpers finally arrive, is it legal to have a stick on number plate on the bonnet of the TJ.

You now the kind of thing, like the one on the jag in this picture

You can guess whats comming now, any suggestions as to where to get one, thinking it would have to be shaped to follow the contours of the bonnet so you dont get any creases in it ?

Not sure about that. As long as its a flat, forward facing surface and the letter size and spacing is right, then I'm not sure what plod or MOT bastards can do about it?

Mind you, on the bonnet of a TJ guess we're not talking flat or forward facing?!?

Oh yeah - seen that done. 100% legal (you can't get further forward facing than that!) and dead easy. Good spot Woody. Think Pete S had these? Or could be remembering wrong...

My understanding is that thats illegal - as the plate isn't "forward facing". Apparently...

My understanding is that thats illegal - as the plate isn't "forward facing". Apparently...

it just so happens that i have asked the question and my front number plate is acceptable and have a piece of paper confirming so....as comen sense prevailed......as to functionality......and before you ask no brown envelope changed hands.

Brown envelopes? The thought wouldn't have crossed my mind Pete! :wink:

Nah - seem to remember in the dim and distant past that (in theory) the number plate should be flat, forward facing, on the nearest available surface (which rules out the roof, etc). I'm sure that you're right about your truck - just not sure that all examiners will agree. JMHO.

We too will be using plasma rope on the winch (both of which are in the garage ready for when the 'kin bumpers turn up :cry:

Where did you get your cherished piece of paper from, MOT station ?

Gotta do it more than ever now if only because Lord Blackie reckons it cant be done legally (no doubt he will be along to pee in my strawberries soon enough :lol:

tis summat to do with "automatic licence plate recognition".......relective background etc....

also, ALL licence plates MUST bear the name & address of the company what made em across the bottom.........(didnt know that bit)

all plates must be made by an authorised supplier (hence the need for the above) & you have to produce your drivin licence & log book when you buy em........

very much "big brother" but very much the law.......

as with all rules, there are exceptions such as classic vehicles......

btw, i know they wont accept a "sticker" type plate for an MOT cos thats what i had on my CJ & thats one thing it failed on......

so there T-cut....... :butthead:

As far as I know, it ain't legal. I tried to have a bonnet plate on my Caterham 7 in 1992, and it wasn't legal then either.

Have a word with Craig at http://http://www.craigsplates.com/ - he made up my 8" x 8" J33P plate for the rear - fully legal spacing, with his name and BS number on. He'll know what is and isn't legal.

When other plate makers were saying an 8 x 8 plate would be illegal (I knew it wasn't, coz the spacings are on the DVLA website), and wouldn't make it up, Craig was clued-up, and made it no problem. I had to send a scanned copy of my Licence and Registration docs for his records though.

It might also be worth asking him if he'll be at the Abingdon 4x4 Festival this year if your planning on going.

Seems to be a bit subjective this doesn't it folks.

It would appear to be not as the law intended but if your MOT man is flexible then its OK.

Cheers for all of the input, I'll have a word with MOT man next week & ask his opinion, if I dont like it I'll try some more MOT places :wink:

Once your bumper finally arrives Gaz check out places that a plate will fit on?
At the mo as temporary measure mines on the OE bumper but offset and it got without comment thro the MOT

KD 's seems to work and if I recall Shep runs an offset plate?
