As far as I know the 4.2's are carbs, so they have a big round air filter on the top. (Unless they've had an injection system added). They also tend to be in older models e.g. CJ's, early YJ's etc.

My Log book tells me Mines a 2.5. I checked it with Jeep and it was built as a 4.0! I tried telling them and they still didn't change it. Just sent it back with 2.5 on it again.

Ed - my log book says it's a 2.5, as far as I can remember this refers to the model not the engine size. Like referring to YJ's as hard tops and TJ's as soft tops.

Plum - the carry over bit Mark was referring to is when Chrysler 'used up' older engines in newer models, 258 the cylinder capacity of a 4.2l in cubic inches. They did this with some YJ's, using a 'CJ engine' in the new models.

Macs Mums log book calls it a 2.5 also but has 3960 as the engine size  :wink:

my motor seems to be a bit of a strange one as even the local steeler cannot come up with anything as the chassis no is 3 digits short of the norm an doesent exist on the world jeep data base (apparently) . . . . .. .

therefore am gonna get in touch with JEEP an see if they can shed some light . . . . . .. once againe cheers . . . . .

If it hasn't got a 14 digit VIN, it might be a Chinese one. They're made by Bejing Jeep, and DaimlerChrysler don't hold any information on them.
