Two Electrical Problems...related?
« on: August 29, 2006, 04:03:22 PM »

After getting rather muddy at the weekend some times when starting I get a real nice squeel from the serp belt and looking at the volt meter it reads 12v, after a short while and some revs the squeeling goes away and the volt meter pops up to 14v.
Now, I'm assuming the alternator is not spinning although I've not cought the little blighter yet. I've given it a good squirt with switch cleaner which seems to have eased it a bit but being realistic is it knackered?
Also since the squeeling started I've been getting some serious static shocks when getting out...could these be related if so anyone know how?

Cheers.

I would have thought the belt is slipping, this would cause the squeal and the alternator would not spin as fast thus the reduction in volts .... but then what do I know !

I'd go with the belt slipping too.... Also worth hosing out the Alt if it's full of mud!

And maybe the weather for static shocks....

Ahh right wasn't sure I could hose the alternator out, I'll go give it a good squirt :)

Check for crud between the ribs in the serp belt too. Play the hose over the inside of the belt while the engine is running - it'll spray everywhere but may well clean out the crud. Alternatively take the belt off and clean it properly - take a note of the routing first though.

The belt's slipping. Clean the crud off, loosen the 15mm bolt that locks the alternator in position and retension with the 13mm tensioning bolt. Give the inside of the alternator a good sqirt of WD40 and you should be ok.
